Canute's purpose in the story is to be Thorfin's foil

He doesn't just do them willingly, he actively acknowledges what he's doing is evil and we see him struggle with it.

Which leads back to his relationship with Thorfin, he's genuinely rooting for Thorfin and helps him when he can after chapter 100
He's pretty much gone down the Walter White rabbit hole when it comes to his atrocities. It's seemingly less from a "I must do this," savior complex to him doing it for his own gain tbh. The poisoning of his brother and the immediate interactions he has with his hallucinations comes off as Canute helping himself with cheap justifications.

OH HE ACKNOWLEDGES THAT HE'S WRONG.

GOOD FOR HIM.

False modesty. That's it.

Military might demands resources.
Military might demands an actual war, or it gets complacent.

Military might perpetuates a cycle of atrocities that we often try to justify because we are all too afraid to be on the losing side.

Farmland arc is great, except for the retarded glorification of slavery. It almost looks "redeemable if done properly with a nice owner".
It's not glorification, it was a reality. You're being too idealistic.

It's like reading a war novel and being mad at how war is presented

Yes! THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT OF CANUTE

Canute wants to achieve peace through blood bcs he isnt Thorfinn, he WANTS thorfinn to win so that Canute doesnt need to do atrocities
