The Holy Knights have depth covenant, while the Gorosei have the Abyssal covenant. And as Shanks said, the deeper you go, the more IMU can control you.

And while I would agree with any other HK, Gunko is special and basically Imu's vessle.

We all are led to think that Imu leaves his abode to finish the fight in person, but he indeed just said that "gods don't dirty their hands", and he might have something unexpected in mind.
