Current Events People really thought Shanks wasn't a swordsman

I’ve never been able to get a satisfactory answer as to why the fuck Mihawk and Shanks would even have their rivalry if Shanks was not actually a swordsman.
It just gets into weird headcanons where Shanks is somehow doing some pity-party stuff and not actually putting his all into fighting. Like that’s really what we are meant to think about the two, that Shanks is just fighting Mihawk condescendingly or some shit.

People didn't believe for the simple reason
1. It bumps EoS Zoro
2. Luffys idol (Shanks) should not be weaker than EoS Zoro
3. Zoro's goal can't be ">" Shanks, If so than EoS Zoro is definitively above Shanks (how strong is EoS Zoro) ?
4. Luffy and Zoro shouldn't be close in strength if Zoro is that powerful EoS then the theory of Luffy low-diffing Zoro won't make sense.
5. Sanji should be close to Zoro, Sanjis ceiling isn't anywhere in the ballpark as Shanks /Mihawk/Garp/WB/Rocks etc.
TLDR : It all comes down to Zoro subtract him and Mihawk from the story there would be no commotion about Shanks being a Swordsman.

All ties back to zoro. Zoro is supposed to be the wss and possibly the strongest swordsman ever in op. If he was over shanks it broke to many agendas. It broke the yonko agenda, the shanks himself agenda, sanji agenda, and luffy agenda. What alot of shanks fans want was for shanks to be peak and only luffy and maybe bb surpassing him. If zoro also passed him then you have the zoro=sanji agenda where now sanji has to surpass him. If sanji can surpass him the you have guys like kidd and law who had way more narrative back then who can surpass him. So now it went from 1 possibly 2 characters surpassing him to around 5 or 6. On top f that you also lose the luffy people that think he can beat all his crew combined and casually beat zoro. If zoro surpassed shanks then they have to say luffy could do even worse to shanks which they don't want to fanboy that hard saying luffy could neg or low diff shanks.
Stop saying that. Nobody "thought" that; it was always deliberate cope. If Mihawk along with the WSS title wasn't a thing in the first place, the swordsman debate wouldn't exist either. In fact I guarantee that Shanks fanboys would refer to Shanks as the unofficial WSS or something, same goes for any strong character with a sword.

The short answer is : Zoro
For the vast majority but some just wanted Shanks to be top1 whatever it takes. For the most part ''Zoro'' is your answer.
