I don't know much about pirate showings in overall media but here a few notable ones
- Pirates of the Caribbean
- Treasure Island (never watched/read)
- Black Sails (recently binged the 4 seasons)
And apart from this I saw In the Heart of the Sea (whale hunting)
From the above (excluding Treasure Island) what I have been able to gather is that the Quartermaster is the second in command in a crew or what we refer to as VC or RHM, basically the number 2 guy on a crew.
And in some cases the RHM/QM/VC has a lot of power and nobody else on the crew has it. I mean there are other roles, helmsman, cook and boatswain etc. but the Captain and QM have the main power, Captain tells the QM something to do and the QM gets it done.
The QM is also the voice of the crew and can oppose the captain when required. The well being of the crew stands on these two pillars and the balance of power.
In the context of OP, while Zoro is not the declared Quartermaster nor does it seem like he does the usual Quartermaster thing, however, him acting as the voice of reason and opposing Luffy has been shown quite a few times and Luffy has also been shown to accept this. I think there are quite a few times when other crew members have asked for Zoro to intervene/help and Zoro has not done so.
For people like me, who have never been on a ship journey or where the sea culture (idk what should be term) is absent (live way far from the sea) this knowledge and understanding does not come naturally and we are unable to appreciate this aspect of the crew dynamic and are just bogged down into power scaling with No.2s/VC/RHM type shit.
P.S. There is no such thing as a left hand man etc. shown in these sea faring crews.
