One of my favorite components in the series, is the dichotomy between Pirates and Marines. Chaos and Order. The story seems to be leading in a direction that tries to find the right balance between the two extremes, and along the way, we've contrasting figures for them.

Pirates
Luffy-Teach

Marines
Smoker-Sakazuki

On one end, you have a freedom loving Pirate like Luffy. Who believes in not being beholden to anything, to follow a path you yourself chose. On the other hand, we've the personified perversion of this, Teach, aka, Blackbeard, whom indulges in tearing through boundaries and doing what it is he likes to do. However, a world without rules or boundaries shall suffer and be consumed by the release that's been handed to it. A figurative pandora's box.

On the flip side, we've the marines, who's basic mantra is 'order' and 'justice'. Somebody like Smoker is all about protecting the innocent from what he perceives as dangers--pirates. Who goes on his path to protect them, not spurred by some indoctrinated idea of justice, but a clear moral compass that allows him to accurately judge what is right and wrong. Sakazuki (Akainu), discards any notion of discretion. It's a do or die belief for control and order. There's a lack of distinction in his views. Anyone who has been labeled a criminal/threat will be disposed of, no questions asked.

And in the middle of this are the citizens of One Piece. The kingdoms who respond differently from each of these spectrums. The 'dawn' as is aptly repeated by characters, would naturally be the start of where the world will be headed.

If there's anything you'd like to add to this relationship between Pirates and Marines, or if there's something you'd like to rebuttal to, please share.

This is really great analysis, dude!

It’ll be interesting to see how those nameless citizens will react once the next “dawn” occurs; will they rejoice in learning the truth about the World Government and how it came to be, will they recoil in fear when hearing of Luffy’s triumph after always viewing him through the scope of the WG propaganda machine, or will they largely be unaffected (assuming One Piece isn’t something literally seismic in nature) and go about their daily lives as we see them do frequently throughout the series?

I love that Oda has shown us the same political spectrum in the canon as we have in many countries in our reality - some citizens think that the government is good, others think it’s bad, and everyone else doesn’t give a shit. To top it all off, the World Government is every bit as corrupt on the inside as some governments have been on the outside in the real world...art imitating life, or the other way around??
