TLDR: Kaido wanted to place Onigashima, Joy Boy’s Oni skull, onto his skeleton, which is buried under Wano/the Flower Capital. The New Onigashima project was designed to restart Pluton by reforming Joy Boy’s corpse and somehow awakening it.
Joy Boy carried the Ancient Kingdom/Wano across the sea as his “Hat”, and Wanokuni rests on Joy Boy’s skeleton to this very day. Pluton/Joy Boy is the “Ship” that “carried” Wano to where it stands today.
(Just imagine this guy, but bigger, carrying an island on his head. RIP Oars Jr, you were a real one)
Long ago, three entities caused great calamity and change within the world:
Pluton, the Oni king of the earth/underworld, who was so strong and massive he could lift islands above his head
(just using Oars for reference)
Poseidon, the Fishman queen of the ocean loved by the sea and its creatures, who could call upon the Sea Kings as her unstoppable army
Uranus, the Shandorian god of the skies, who would rain down destructive lightning from high using immense technology
It is said that only one who can bring this trio of calamities together, may find the One Piece, and return the world to its free, natural form (see what Kaido did there? Three calamities? Ehhh? Ehhhhhhhh?)
1. Kaido’s Ambition as an Oni (“I’m here because it’s Wano, Yamato!” – Chapter 1016)
-Being defeated by Joy Boy (“Joy Boy will be the one who can defeat me”)
-Torturing/killing/imprisoning Wano citizens
-Creating a great army of powerful fighters
-Creating a great number of weapons
-Gathering the three ancient weapons
-Placing Onigashima onto the Flower Capital
Kaido has made it clear he is aware of a great deal of the ancient history, often referencing Joy Boy, Rocks, Roger, the One Piece, and the Ancient Weapons. He has also made it clear he straight up hates Wano. Or, does he? Why doesn’t Kaido simply kill any Samurai that oppose him, rather than constantly giving the Scabbards chances to survive/attack him?
2. All Roads Lead to Wano and Onigashima
What is God Valley? Well, what does the name imply? A valley full of gods. A valley is a great gap in the ground. A grave. God Valley is a graveyard of the former “Gods” of the world: Lunarians, Dragons, Oni, etc.
Onigashima, a skull of a great Oni, was stolen from God Valley by Kaido on the day Rocks fell (Big Mom: “Kaido, where did you go?”). Just as Kaido lifted Onigashima up to drop it onto the Flower Capital, he stole it from God Valley all those years ago. Why fight over a skull?
Well, who’s skull is it? Think back to a certain hat in Mary Geoise, the giant straw hat Imu stared at. Think that hat might fit onto the skull known as Onigashima?
Yes, Onigashima is the skull of Joy Boy himself. This is where it gets personal: Joy Boy wasn’t just an Oni: Joy Boy is Kaido’s ancient ancestor.
Why did Kaido think “I’m the only one who can change this world!”? Because he knew about Joy Boy’s history from Rocks, and knew he was Joy Boy’s descendant. Kaido honestly believed he was going to become Joy Boy, inherit that Will, and free the world.
Until he found out he wasn’t. So, what then? If Kaido can’t become Joy Boy, what’s the logical next step?
Create the necessary conditions to create Joy Boy.
What are those conditions? What is Joy Boy’s purpose? To liberate the world, by creating a giant war against the World Government. So, what would draw Joy Boy out?
Enslavement. Starvation. Poverty. War.
Why does Kaido not kill? Because he doesn’t want his enemies to die, unless he’s convinced they can’t become Joy Boy. He wants the Scabbards, Kid, and Luffy to get back up again and again: he wants them to become stronger, to become Joy Boy.
Kaido is the ultimate anti-villain: he became everything he hated, to create the conditions necessary to bring about the Dawn, and bring about the return of Joy Boy. Amazing tragic character.
The weapons; the army; making Wano into a war fortress: all of it was for the sake of giving Joy Boy the ship, Wano, he would need to defeat the WG. By becoming their tormentor/enslaver, Kaido helped Wano reach the true Dawn. Doesn’t excuse Kaido’s actions (that is not the point of this post), but it explains his character well.
The New Onigashima Project was never just about crushing Wano’s Flower Capital. It was about reuniting Onigashima, the skull of Joy Boy, with the rest of his corpse underneath Wano, to create a totally impregnable war fortress for the new Joy Boy.
Look at this weird ass country. Why in the hell does it look like this? Almost like… it’s being held up by something. Or, someone?

The Oni Joy Boy, the King of the Ancient Kingdom, protected what remained of the AK/Wano, by placing its different countries upon his head, and carrying them to safety.
The country that is know as Wano is what remains of the Ancient Kingdom, resting on the skeleton of its savior, Joy Boy. For hundreds of years, he had held it up above him, waiting for the day it would rise into the Dawn, and become truly free: become a Sky Island.
Big Mom will rise from the lava (she’s been in the hole for seven days, the last time she didn’t eat for a week she wreaked havoc upon Elbaf), most likely making Joy Boy’s corpse, Pluton, into her Oni-skeleton-soaked-in-lava Homie, causing a massive eruption in the process.
Big Mom has made all of her powerful Homies from natural forces of nature, and named them after Greek Gods. Zeus/Hera, Prometheus. What Greek God is attached to volcanos? Hephaestus. I expect Hephaestus to be her new Homie (at least for a time). Big Mom literally dropped onto Pluton. Bless you, Meme.
Sky Islands are formed when Pyrobloin, the main component of Seastone, is launched into the air via volcanic eruptions, and mixes with water vapor. Wano will be launched up in the the sky via eruption, and become a Sky Island.
Joy Boy will finally be liberated after years of carrying the country on his back, and Wano will “Open its Borders” and become the “Most Free” nation in the world: a flying fortress.
Wano won’t “Open its Borders” by allowing people to come into it: Wano will “Open its Borders” by flying into the sky, and becoming a country that can go anywhere. A truly free nation.
We Laputa now, baby.
3. Odds and Ends/Black Beard’s role in Wano
-I imagine we’re going to see a giant war rivaling Marineford as Act 4
-Just like the Straw Hats gathered together to take down Oars, I think they will come together to take down Pluton/Joy Boy/Hephaestus
-Pluto, which Pluton is based off of, is the Greek God of the Underworld
-Pluto and the Underworld were guarded by… the three headed-dog, known as Cerberus
-I believe this supports Black Beard having the Cerberus fruit: he is three men trapped inside of one body, who is unable to sleep due to his mind always being active. This also allows him to use two other fruits: Black Beard won’t get a third fruit, he already possesses the Mythical Zoan Cerberus, the Darkness Logia, and the Earthquake Paramecia.
-Mythical Zoan Cerberus allows the user to take in three different personalities/fruits. Black Beard may hold Rocks within him still.
-Cerberus guarded Pluton from the gates of Hell; so, Black Beard will knock down the gates to Wano and invade it to get to Pluton
-Uranus is probably the Moon, IMO, and requires Enel’s fruit to activate it. The Moon is literally a fucking death star. Sugoi, Oda-sensei, that’s crazy. If anyone wants to piece together evidence, feel free, because I probably won’t. I need to spend less time with analysis, I just love researching this series so much
-I wouldn’t be surprised if Sabo/the Revolutionaries actually stole the giant Straw Hat from Mary Geoise and brought it to Wano. That’s probably me jumping the gun, though. Just imagine, though?
Sabo: “HEY! LUFFY! I GOT YOU A NEW HAT! HERE!”
(cuts a building in half by tossing the giant straw hat)
Welp. There’s my plot analysis. A lot of this has come from reading great posts/watching great videos. I’m not trying to profit off One Piece at all, I just love the series. If you know the originators of some of these theories (especially the Black Beard Cerberus theory), please, let me know, I’d love to give credit/post links from the people, who came up with these theories I’ve read/listened to/learned from. Thank you!
Edit: fixed the images with my somewhat improved knowledge of formatting. Also, I now think Nami is Uranus, not Enel, so I should probably edit that soon, too.
