Hi.

Do you think Luffy getting cocky, childlike and unfocused because of his new title and power is good or bad writing ?

By "cocky" I mostly mean a slight problem of oversight from Luffy since his emperor title and G5 Power-up.

Depends if he's just this way for the rest of the series then yeah but if the humbling he just experienced in Elbaf makes him lock in for the better then its good it would show a process of him getting over confident and cocky before getting knocked back to reality

I feel that the readers are just being critical of Luffy because they don't like him.

Gaban is just acting like Rayleigh. Rayleigh was harsh on him during training, but Gaban is seeing the payoff for it and saying it's still not enough to be the Pirate King.

It's easy to say Luffy is immature, that's a character trait he has, but turning on him because Gaban, who is playing mentor to him, told him to get serious is selling Luffy short.

You see, he's comparing him to Joyboy whose Haki was seen at Egghead and to Shanks whose Haki is comparable to it. He's just complaining that Luffy isn't making things easy.

I suspect the grievances readers hold against Luffy right now are the result of misplaced anger.

That anger is actually coming from Luffy healing with food, and they want to spite him.

You know that you are not going to get an objective answer right. This site is too negative towards Luffy and One Piece as a whole. What you should do is post the same question on the Main One Piece Reddit. And then compare the two polls.

That this site is doesn't like Luffy? Or his powers? Or that this site is just Negative, and doesn't like Current One Piece in General?
No. Just that haters usually use their own judgment to analyze the story instead of the quality of the narration. Which create a vicious circle of confirmation biases and self-eating argumentation "it's bad because I think it's bad"... creating the reason why people started to hate the story so much in the first place.

In other words, people created and are still creating their own hatred of One Piece

I don't agree with "getting cocky, childlike and unfocused" because if they are his traits, they're not new.
True, I'm mostly talking about an slight increase of these character traits. It's indeed still subtle.

most of his losses are because he's too cocky.
Not really, more like a problem of underestimating of his ennemies or lack of ability.

When I'm talking about oversight/cockyness, I'm talking about an active flaw created by the intersection of his G5 transformation and his knowledge of being an emperor. Luffy is like entranced by his own power. He is still reactive, but slightly unfocused.

Which is I think why the genie appeared. Luffy is simply all over the place, he is playing too much "with himself" around and is losing the focus of the ennemy. We can see that a lot in Egghead.

I think this is why he lost here and why Gaban is making a point to scold him

I don't think Luffy is actually going to change his approach to anything. Oda wants Luffy to appear as though he's working through a flaw to justify his upcoming power growth. If that growth happens without being anchored to a genuine low point, it won't feel earned. It'll just feel like a trick.

Luffy is Luffy. Authors don't tend to change aspirational heroes. I wouldn't expect anything more than a moment where Luffy verbalizes some kind of "growth" or change in mentality, if even that, but ultimately, it won't amount to anything fundamentally new. He's been through these ruts before and always came out the other side victorious by simply being himself.

Gaban isn't telling Luffy, "Don't turn into a Genie, son" because Oda is never going to stop drawing whatever he want's. That's all that was. It wasn't a failure on Luffy's part, it was Oda having fun. All Gaban is telling Luffy is to do better. It's a broad statement, "just be better". But if you believe that Luffy's version of "better" is going to look like some fundamental change in his personality or approach, then no. That's not what I expect.
