He gave blackbeard a hell of a fight with a lot less experience and without knowledge of his df. He could match aokiji despite being weakened.
Strength wise, nobody would have matched him eos if he was still alive.

Part of that was because he didn't like to be known as "Roger's son". He wanted the opposite, to be so renowned that people would actually start speaking of Roger as the "father of Ace", and thus for this reason wanted to do something even his father didn't accomplish, with the novels implying his way of accomplishing that was to subdue the marines, shichibukais, yonko, and celestial dragons. But ultimately the desire of a family ended up being above all else
