when did you think it became useless?

It was always rather consistent honestly

One of the few series in which power levels were respected so much

But I didn't like how badly Goku was empowered just for being the MC, expecially during the Frieza Saga, the way he reached that level with the recovery machine was insane.

Post Namek it got wonky without Toryiama dropping the official numbers, but it was understandable because initially he wanted to end Dbz with Goku defeating Freezer and that was reflected upon the exponentially jump in powerlevel- from 30.000 in base when Goku arrived at Namek to 150.000.000 full powered up as SSJ.

By the beginning of the Android Saga we likely would've got into the billions already, let alone end of Cell and beginning of Buu Saga...
So removing the numbers was likely the right decision and gave him more freedom instead of being too fixated on meme- worthy numbers.
Overall until the end of Dbz was still quite consistent in powerscaling (ofc it had it's flawless regardless) and you could easily follow it based of feats and character statements alone- Like Trunks, another SSj being introduced fodderizing Freezer and then stating the Androids are a frightning threat.
Also the official multiplayers of the SSJ-3 transformations helped.

Meanwhile especially the Dbs anime is just a mush of inconsistent and unbelievable jumps in power and/or lacks exposition.
