Okay so, I've been reading one piece since Dressrosa and the more I read the more obvious it is that Oda doesn't give a shit about powerscaling as much as the community does, which I think is very good.
Instead, he focuses more on the story perspective, like how strong they should be for the story to be good if that makes sense.
SO, I'll do some powerscaling from the sort perspective only.
We know that fluffy and his crew are going to surpass Roger and his crew and for that to happen there are few conditions that must be met.
1) Luffy's opponents must be stronger than Roger's opponents ( by opponents I mean like major opponents like WB, Garp, Rocks, etc)
2) Luffy's feats must surpass Roger's feats ( and so does his crew's feats)
3) Luffy must do something that Roger couldn't (One Piece)
These are the three primary conditions that I can think of (I might be missing some, you can comment those below)
In this post, I'm going to focus on the first condition primarily.
Who were Roger's main opponents?
1) Rocks (Enemy) - stated to be his most difficult/challenging opponent (by Sengoku I think?)
2) Whitebeard (Rival) - Believed to be his equal.
3) Garp+Sengoku (Marines) - Strongest marines (I think)
4) World Government - Imu + five-star elders
Now let's see Luffy's main opponents.
1) Blackbeard (Enemy) - he must surpass Rocks from the perspective of story. I'm not saying that he's stronger than Rocks atm. But when the final showdown will happen, he must be stronger than Rocks for the story to progress.
2) I don't think Luffy has any Rivals who could come anywhere near the level of Whitebeard, I just can't see Kid, Law, Hawkins, etc becoming as strong as Whitebeard seeing their current conditions. It looks the Luffy is not going to have any main rivals.
The best person to suit this narrative is Shanks, I think. Since he is around the same level and there's a friendly rivalry between Fully and Shanks.
3) Akainu (Marine) - Now this is a tricky one and will probably get a lot of people mad, but I think from the perspective of story Akainu has to stronger than Garp or Sengoku when the final showdown happens. He isn't that strong now, but he will be that strong in future unless there is is no Marine Engdame opponent for fluffy and Akainu will face Sabo (which also makes a lot of sense). So, I'm not so sure about this one. But yeah, If Akainu will be one of Luffy's endgame opponent then he will be as strong as Garp or Sengoku at the very least.
4) Imu-sama (World Government) - Imu-sama is stronger than Roger. He has to be stronger than Roger, and defeating him would be the final milestone for Luffy to prove that he has surpassed GOL D ROGER.
Now, to prove that Oda is heading the plotline from this perspective, I would like to give an example of something that happened recently.
Roger pirates vs Whitebeard pirates
Roger pirates had - Roger (prime), Rayleigh (prime), Gaban( prime), etc(in their prime as well).
Whitebeard pirates had - Whitebeard (prime), Oden (prime), Marco (23 yrs old), Vista (25 yrs old), Jozu (20 yrs old), etc
I get that Roger and Newgate are equals.
But who handled Rayleigh and Gaban?
Oden? (I don't think he can defeat any of them let alone handle both)
Marco (he is 23 yrs old....if he was around Rayleigh's level at that point, then how strong is he now? he should've surpassed both roger and WB by now)
Vista and Jozu ? ( same reasoning as Marco)
The fight went for 3 days and night, how did it end up in a draw then? Rayleight and Gaban had enough time to defeat everyone else while Roger kept Wb busy.
It doesn't make sense (to me at least)
But, from the story perspective,it definitely makes sense that the two strongest pirates of the time clashed and it resulted in a draw.
So, these were my thoughts on the powerscaling thing, I'm pretty sure there are A LOT of plot holes in this, I'll be happy if you point them out.
