No, using the same thing in two different ways does not make it more advanced. CoC coating is basically a different application from CoC bursts. That's why Luffy started using it rather well as soon as he learned you can coat your attacks with CoC without awakening new powers like he did when he awakened FS or advCoA. Obviously, it takes skill to use CoC whether it is CoC bursts or CoC coating and Luffy got that training from Hygoro. The only difference here is, CoC coating isn't as easy to achieve for most people as it is to achieve CoC bursts.

Take CoA for example: At its most basic level, you simply coat yourself or your weapons in armament. When you take it one level further, you'd be able to create Haki barriers and use non-touching attacks on top of the regular coating. And one step beyond the barrier version is the ability to cause internal damage. The same armament Haki gets upgraded to internal destruction here.
