Yes, because we would get rid of toxicity. In our current world, that is not what is happening.
Not necessarily no. That's a fatalist way to see the world.
Those odds can be increased. But only if you are rich and have a maximazed your capitals, which is something only priviledged people can do.
That's why we are fighting to change society. Precisely because a society that stands on the belief of meritocracy is a society that stands on a myth and on a inequal and inequitable system.
Its an unfair society. So we must get rid of the belief in order to create something more fair.
That's who life works under capitalism. Meritocracy is not a belief that gives you more chances. Its a belief that gives more chances for those who already have chances.
Yes, but at least they won't have to strive against systemic racism to get the same chances as others white people.
What you don't understand is that the beginning of some is not the same beginning of others. This is why meritocracy is a myth and will never exist.
In reality, no one has the same chances. We are all products and living alongside our capitals:
- Economic capital : How many money you and your family has. This will usually put your in a specific class of population
- Cultural capital : This is grossly the amount of cultural information you have at your disposal since birth
- Social capital : This is the relationship your family and you will have access to
Those are the main forms of capitals. In function of the difference between those factors, your life will be completely different depending on your situation.
This is why someone who has already a maximization of those capitals at birth will be FAR MORE advantaged than someone who has none.
And this is why meritocracy is not real and will never will be. Those notion completely negates the impact of skill and efforts in the social and economical ascension of a person in life. In other words, you are probably not being payed a good amount of money because you are skilled, but because of your capitals. (even if skill matters, a little little LITTLE bit)
Here is a video explaining capitals :
This is what (shematized) meritocracy AS A BELIEF SYSTEM looks like:

But this is what reality (highly shematized) looks like:

In Blue: Economic capital
In Red: Social capital
In Green : Cultural capital
In purple: Asset accessed because of those Capitals
To get the first skill, some priviledged people won't have to do much. But others will have to fight the entire system.
Meritocracy is and will always be a myth, a false belief
We must get rid of it.
