A minor correction, the Paladin/Sheriff is not a unique role. There can be multiple in one game. Everything else you said here is correct.

even if there is a town protective role on him, there are roles that can mess up their investigation results
last game the paladin only wasn't useless because there was a strong neutral role protecting him from getting framed

Like you said the sheriff/paladin in every game. And with the unseen, they start off with an assassin and the mastermind.

It would be wise to at least have a general idea
