Scopper is best Roger Pirate overwhelmingly far now for me personally. Followed by Buggy lol.

I really hoped Oda would deliver with the Roger Pirates for decades and Scopper has delivered on that front immensely especially. Even more so in this chapter. I really love great parental figure type characters.

Colon was extremely brave and his parents will definitely be proud, Gaban had 100% faith in him and he was right to. Those panels of both him and Brook shown as fathers made me tear up genuinely, especially as a long time Brook stan too.

Elbaf has suddenly become my favourite post TS arc easily, recency bias be damned.

@kekaro Definitely has future sight like Gabanachad ofc with his Roshi predictions ages ago for him and you can really feel Odas love and inspirations from Dragonball, Toriyama and thus Roshi with Gaban. Hell the way Gaban toyed with Luffy and Zoro made me nostalgic for both Roshi with Kid Goku and Krillin and also Jiraiya and Naruto. Jiraiya definitely felt Roshi inspired too, maybe Gai a bit too (I fucking love Gai sensei but Jiraiya too) and funnily enough, not only both of those men such great men and overwhelmingly amazing ninja, but incredible father figures to Rock Lee and Naruto ofc.

There's a bunch of Naruto music I can immediately assign to Gaban and hear with him. Like Kinemon, Pedro and Brook, Gyros, Wyper, Zeff, Tom and Franky, Mihawk, Kyros etc, Oda writes at some of his best when writing these very 80s macho, cool, badass action hero but also strong father figure, male role model characters. Clearly what he loves and inspires him and that's also what Dragonball and especially Dragon Aura Farming Z had in absolutely bucket loads at minimum too. Just endless amounts.

Gabans writing feels very nostalgic, like coming home. It feels like classic, peak one piece and other stuff I've grown up on and mentioned here.

Gaban is not only cooler in ways I could have imagined but he definitely surpassed the immensely high expectations i had for him and the Roger Pirates crew in his own hilariously bizarre, epic, stylish, cool ways. The "Mountain Eater" for real.

I'm still getting emotional over the panels of him with Ripley with Colons birth and him saying Colon is the most precious moment of his life. His character and actions make so much sense and my respect for him soars so high, it shoots past Skypeia and slaps Enel on the moon.

If anything I dare say, Gaban feels like the most Oda self insert character but more so less directly intentionally on Odas part and more like his own subconscious character, his soul or spirit and thus nuances that inspire and mold him if that makes sense?

My head is spinning this chapter, so much actually happened and was revealed and I can't process it.
But I am definitely a permanent Gaban fan for life now. It's no coincidence he's the 3rd most important Roger Pirate (and Rogers left hand/wing) and we have the absolutely legendary Lord Gaben of Newell IRL ofc, from Valve Tale too.

I really hope Gaban doesn't die and I doubt he will BUT IF he does, he's gone out on such a godamn high. But also if Kuma cam bounce back and cheat death like this, along with the Vegapunks, I have faith Scopper will return and laugh at all the shamed deadbeat dads in the series, rather than justifying their deadbeat decisions.

For me this chapter was peak cause how oda really well integrated the figthing into the story, which was severy lacking in 99% of wano.
Instead "wowie wowie black lightnign spam" this chapter was really good for scopper and colon with how well it played.

Gaban is shown to be a conqueror, Colon is leading the kids and trying to be strong. Gaban coul have tried to slice gunko still, he used future sight and while colon really suffered and injured he pobally live. He decesivly doesnt do because that image is just so shocking to him to let colon suffer that much and doing the real big thing. Oda used those abilities to sho how gaban as a person is was really wll done imo

Aye I completely agree man. The fighting has been much better lately. Really enjoyed Scopper vs Luffy and Zoro too. Definitely much better than Wano too, a much better balance and not juggling the spotlight on one or the other at a time and thus shortchanging them alternately.

Yeah I agree, it's a completely natural, believable, relatable/understandable, humane reaction from Scopper to hesitate, be scared and surrender. As Dragon said, a parents weakness is their child or undoing or whatever. Their weak spot.

Oda could go even darker and say that Scopper had a child in the past and lost them, maybe even under a sort of similar situation or not and that would further justify his fears, anger, hesitation etc but it's completely unnecessary ofc and we can easily/clearly understand his feelings and motivations enough.

As someone said on Reddit, Scopper mentioned being out of his ptine here, as Garp and Rayleigh did, a recurring theme for a reason ofc. Obviously evident with Sengpku, Whitebeard, Big Mom, Tsuru etc.

Said person reckoned Prime Gaban could have easily killed Gunko and saved Colon and I'm inclined to agree but it's still too fatally risky regardless ofc. As Gunko said, you can't bring back the dead (cough ironically with her "father" Brook and maybe she is a zombie herself hence still being so "young" over half a century later minimum and there's also Mr zombie army Moria with Hogback running their own Temu brand Edo Tensei ofc) and thus Scopper made a risky but smart decision here.

Gunko/Imu could kill Colon and the kids anyway but as utterly psychopathic as they seem to be, there still seems to be some honour ironically as they released Ronja from offing herself by literal force and also backed down from killing Colon too.

I think instead of Ronja falling down to Loki and the picnic trio, Gaban will fall to the oblivious monster quartet even and they will save Gaban accidentally or deliberately and Gerd will treat him hopefully? Gaban has unfinished business with the SHs to discuss at the end of the arc/when things are resolved and calm again as he said before and Oda pulled so much death face outery and said he wants everyone to survive for the biggest EOS banquet party celebration too. Since Kuma and the Punks all survived, Gaban should too and way too few villains, evil people have died by comparison in story so Oda really needs to counterbalance that.

Sanji could just skywalk up to the sky world and maybe carry some people with him. Chopper could have treated Gaban but sadly Gaban is knocked off the branch ofc.
I'm sure Loki and Luffy will get everyone else up there to face Gunkimu ASAP now ofc.

I completely agree too, Gaban is definitely a conqueror. Fuck the haters/downplayers lol.

I think a somewhat underlooked, yet definitely touching thing was Gaban's "It must've hurt real bad. I'm sorry." He was feeling extreme anguish even over a comparatively minor thing like Colon's neck being nicked. To think what magnitude of feelings the whole situation stirred inside him. :perocry:

I loved seeing Scopper calling Colon his treasure. And the pain on his face witness colons death was really well done.

Scopper is part of the very rare “Good One Piece Dad club”
I love the panel of him emitting "enraged father" aura, big fan of those tropes

Too bad he didn't land the hit on Gunko

He felt like he let everyone down, was obvious Colon will be the only weakness from stopping him from slaughtering those 3

Yeah I get why though. Dude saw his entire world die before him, he did what was right for him. Can’t blame him, can’t really blame the kid either. Honestly, all the blame falls to the straw hats for letting the kid get captured.

Calling colon his treasure hits extra hard because this after they found one piece :neesama:
Dude literally saw all the world had to offer and said nah, this boy is it.
OMFG, I DIDNT EVEN REALISE THAT! GODAMN!

Treasure can be replaced. Treasure is expendable. Family is not, especially your own flesh and blood. Your own kin. I've always wanted to be a parent so this really hit hard for me too.

I should have worn darker shades to read this chapter...

Plus the Brook stuff too and how it relates somehow to Gaban as well...

Shouldering the weight of his family and the entire of Elbaph on his shoulders, and by extension Ohara as they are burning the schools built around their research

Such a huge burden on this man

Gaban quickly bounced to top 2 old gen for me (Whitebeard still at the top for me).But it’s great to see oda can still write engaging minor characters without overrelying on everyone just saying how great they are.

Gaban is probably hearing this song in his head right now and so has Brook since what happened with his crew but now being reminded of the girl he forgot, his own "daughter" Gunko too:

It's that time in One Piece to cry again, sad times again boys and girls.
