I think Roger took him on his ship because he felt sorry over killing his father. We don’t know anything about Shanks past other than his time on Roger’s ship.
Also we don’t know Shanks full name.
Whitebeard said to Shanks when they met ”Seeing your face makes the wound given by that bastard ache”, he’s probably talking about Rocks and not Roger because he spoke about him normally afterwards and he was on good terms with Roger.
Rocks discovered alot of dirt on the WG and Shanks is probably using that against the WG, like when he stopped the war and being able to speak to the Gorosei.
He has something on the government that forces them to obey Shanks and he got that from Rocks.
