And two; you mean when Smoker was made a protagonist of the first New World arc, and gave him compelling character moments/development/setup for the future, once such thing being him literally getting sent to possibly the most mysterious character in the series next to Imu; Vegapunk.

What other characters do you punish for not being pretty much omnipresent?
Smoker was gone from the story aside from quick cut too's post-Alabasta and pre-Marineford.
What did you want post-TS?
Him being more of a Luffy groupie than he already is?
Forced insertions where he's not needed in the narrative?

If anyone was the protagonist, it was law. Smoker got beat so he put it all on the line just to get a bloody and beaten law his heart back. He saw law leaking on the ground and thought "no way could he do any worse than i am". Law got the cool one liner. Law beat the bad guy. Law made an alliance. Law targeted kaido. Law got the next arc.
