That was like 6 years before he fought Kaido... I can assume after seeing Roger and Whitebeard, 6 years are enough for him to pick up what they were doing
He more probably had this type of CoC, at least Kaido said "you also have the color of the conqueror" to Luffy, not sure how much he knew about it. Not just for that either way, but given how potent his slashes were.
So now we are assuming that CoC attacks can happen also when nothing visually indicates them. EDIT: obviously I'm referring to Oden's attack, not to Ragnarok.
Great...
We're basically back to preskip with invisible haki.
He did. Kaido commented at first that he thought the scabbards were using the same kind of Ryou that Oden was. But then realized it was different by proclaiming their cuts were too shallow.
Luffy was damaging Kaido with Ryou, but commented that the attacks were still too shallow.
Queue AdCoC and Luffy's punches started doing way more damage.

The visuals seem to be present in the paradise Totsuka panel though. There is the same black lightning following the trajectory of Oden's attack.
Those for example weren't present when he cut that mountain god back then.
Imo Oda probably just did not show the actual execution of paraside Totsuka in order to not spoil that concept and the fact that it's required for defeating Kaido, which is comprehensible.
