The first was anime filler and the second was a mistranslated dubline

While that scene was filler personally it didn't look too crazy so it felt like canon to me. They took a few liberties sure but Goku was losing and seeing him do something other than instantly dying could be chalked down to his experience and solid basics. I am also a goku fanboy so that adds plus points of course. Was big-time disappointed when I found out that fight didn't exist in the manga. :(
