This makes Tashigi important, as she's connected to Kuina, Zoro's inspiration, and Zoro himself, and allows Tashigi to be connected to Zoro.

I've spent a long time trying to come up with theories that connect Tashigi to Kuina, but this is the simplest: they're just sisters. That's why they look alike, what's why Zoro is put off by Tashigi, that's why the both love swords.

Total longshot theory, but I'm trying to figure out what the HELL Tashigi's point in the story is. Zoro couldn't protect Kuina, but, he can protect and aid Tashigi. Maybe Zoro trains Tashigi, while discussing Kuina with her?

Thoughts?

Cousins would be better like in @Vans old theories.

Anyhow Oda is using Smoker & Tashigi as bridges for the marines to see that not all pirates are evil. As well see how corrupted the world government is and how it need to be change for the better.
Cousins would be good, too. Would probably make more sense narratively.

It's clear that, even if Smoker and Tashigi act like they don't, they like the Straw Hats. Hope this arc gives them both some great moments.

I think it’s pretty likely that the old sword-smith Shimotsuki had three kids and each of those three kids then had Zoro, Kuina and Tashigi.
I'm still betting on Zoro being Ryuma's son sent from the past to the future by Toki.

The swordsman Zoro has been connected to the most is Ryuma, and Toki makes it possible for him to be Zoro's dad. This also makes it so that Zoro beat his zombie dad to reclaim his sword, which I really like.

Yeah, it's the crazy obsession with swords that interests me.

When Oda drew Tashigi as a child, she had a bamboo sword next to her, just like the kind Kuina and Zoro used.

Could just be a coincidence, though.
100% a coincidence.

The OP world is overstocked with swordsmen and lots of Oda’s child drawings feature characters practicing with a weapon/in possession of one or doing their profession as a hobby

Ashley Rochefort: "Why does Tashigi look like Zoro's old friend Kuina?"
Oda: "Its just a coincidence. There's no backstory like Tashigi turns out to be Kuina's sister or something....[laughs]"
