Questions & Mysteries Teach’s Insomnia

#1
Compiling some thoughts and questions based on the info that Teach doesn’t sleep, which is the biggest bomb Oda dropped in 966 IMO. Lots of others have made similar speculations so none of this is wildly original.

- Based on the art of him as a child, it doesn’t look like it’s something he’s happy about. In 966 Buggy referred to him as a monster because he doesn’t sleep. He was probably ostracized because of it.
- It likely has some connection with the moon. It’s possible that any source of light keeps Teach awake, or that the moon specifically always does. The moon generally seems to have some connection with the Will of D.
- I read the theory of him having a medical condition which would cause him to die if he actually falls asleep. Atm i don’t agree with it. I think he’s physically incapable of sleeping. Avoiding sleeping wouldn’t make him a monster. Not being able to sleep (and functioning fine without it) would.
- I could see Teach originally seeking out the Yami Yami just to allow himself to sleep, not for power. If he needs absolute darkness to sleep, he might have determined that the devil fruit is the only way he could achieve it.
- He gets close to doubled waking hours compared to everyone else if he doesn’t sleep. This is possibly what Ace meant when he said that Teach has lived “twice the life” as him. This is probably related to Marco saying that he has an unusual body as well. Is it also related to him being able to eat two devil fruits?
- I also don’t think that Luffy and Zoro referring to him as “they” in Loguetown means anything beyond him having a crew.
- Fairly obvious conclusion is that he’s used this extra time to study devil fruits and the history of the world deeply.
- The recent revelation that he has/had 2 sisters makes things even more interesting. Do/did they sleep? Or do they all come from a race/clan that doesn’t? Are all of Teach’s connections to the number 3 some sort of tribute to them? What about the whack Cerberus theories where his sisters are somehow a part of him or even share his body?

Probably a byproduct of him being merged with his two sisters

Man, everything about Teach is a creepy mystery. I hope the absence of sleep is a byproduct of the darkness fruit. The merged triplet option makes Blackbeard out to be some sort of Frankenstein monster if that's the case. And knowing One Piece... that's probably going to be the case.
:noo:
He was sleepless way before he got the fruit. The events of 966 were decades before he killed Thatch.

I agree with a lot of this, but I’m inclined to think there’s still more to that “they” comment in Jaya. Whether or not that means Blackbeard absorbed his sisters remains to be seen, but he’s gotta have or be more than one person.

Also think the idea of the Yami Yami no Mi helping him sleep by providing absolute darkness is interesting, but if he’s lived his entire life without it, what good would the Devil Fruit really do? If anything, it stands to make him LESS powerful/efficient because he now knows how recuperative a good night’s sleep can be.

:nicagesmile::kaidowhat:

That's clearly connected to his strange body that Marco mentioned.
For the longest time I wanted to believe this too, but if you go back and read the chapter, it’s pretty obvious Zoro and Luffy were just referring to his crew and that this is a case of the fanbase trying to connect dots that don’t exist. I’m not against the Cerberus theory, but that scene doesn’t say anything about it.

Imagine for a second that, as the theory goes, Zoro and Luffy somehow sensed that Teach’s body was composed of more than one person. Why, instead of saying something about it to each other, let alone the rest of the crew, especially Nami when she asked, they cryptically say “it’s they...probably.” Luffy especially wouldn’t be likely to shut up about some sort of a chimera. Zoro and Luffy speaking in odd riddles to their nakama is about as out of character as it gets.

Edit: This is Stephen's translation of that scene:

Luffy: Dunno...
But... it's not HE...

Nami: Not he?
Then... what?

Zoro: It's THEM...
I'd bet.

Nami: What do you mean?
You mean that guy... has partners?
Where?!

They were talking about his crew.
