Hi Worstgen,
It's fairly obvious what the Ancient Robot's purpose is.
I once told people here the Ancient Kingdom had superior robots compared to anything Vegapunk could make- the Automata are Ancient Robots whose designs exceed Vegapunks' own and they were introduced early on in the story via cover stories. They were directly related to the Ancient Sky Tribes. Moreover, they had FEELINGS.
Now, I do not think the Ancient Robot has feelings. However, I think what it represents is the gap in technological culture that is being illustrated here.
The Ancient Robot is basically the Pacifista of the Ancient Kingdom. It is superior to the Pacifista Vegapunk has created, and its intended purpose is to wipe out the inferior robots attacking the Straw Hat crew.
Saturn had pointed out that whoever controls the Pacifistas will win the battle, but he doesn't realize that there is an even more powerful robot active on the Island that isn't under his authority.
