Which MC ever died in a war? Luffy got his ass always beaten by a Admiral back then,he was only standing because of Ivankov otherwise he would be done. It was good how Oda handle Luffy back then. He was not op, he didn't have a magic boost, he was saved a lot which show that Luffy was not ready for the high stages. Lot of great stuff happen.

It's not about the MC dying...it's how Oda handles situations in which he could have died. Oda is not able to solve those moments believeable. He always puts Luffy in those kind off situations and lets him survive them because he simply makes the bad guy a complete idiot. That is bad writing. That just shows how Oda is not able to handle those situations correctly, yet he forces them over and over and over again. And thanks to that he completely killed the ''tension'' factor in his story, because we all know he is gonna do some Looney tune kinda BS to solve serious problems.

Just look at the ''War against 2 Yonkou'' in Onigashima - it's a clown show.
