We had high civilizations but they were differently'developed' than ours today.
We can't explain how the pyramids exactly were built, there are some metalworking techniques that we can't replicate with machines etc
People were just much better using their own bodies and actual mechanical skills.

People hate the enemy because they got nothing else to do.
Bonus point of you find a bunch of other folks who will hate the enemy with you, because hating the enemy in a group is even more fun.
