You all thought r/OnePiece was bad, here's an argument I got with a Toriyama fanboy from r/DBZ. (This all happened through PM's.)

Toriyama Fanboy:
Reddit is "broken", so I'm answering to your comment here, I guess.

>Your cute (subjective) adjectives aside, that's the point of his character.

What's the point of giving such a bland, edgy, uninteresting walking stereotype not one, but TWO TV specials?

>How?

A guy can just give anyone premonition powers with no explanation because that's convenient for the plot. And to make Z Bardock even more shallow than he already is.

Me:
[What's the point of giving such a bland, edgy, uninteresting walking stereotype not one, but TWO TV specials?]

First one, to tell the story of Goku's father and Goku's origins.

Second one (I assume it's the SSJ one, which isn't a TV special), to be promotional material for some game (like those old OVA's).

[A guy can just give anyone premonition powers]

You're talking about a universe with people or beings who can shoot chi beams out of their hands, turn into giant apes at the full moon, shape shift into anything, sneeze into a different hair color and persona, turn people into candy with an antenna or stone with a spit, freeze time by holding their breath, switch bodies with other people, and your suspension of disbelief ends at beings who can curse (or bless) you with visions?

[with no explanation]

It lacks as much of an explanation as most of the above. Your point?

[because that's convenient for the plot.]

Which happens quite a lot in Dragon Ball (Korin’s Tower and Snake Way come to mind).

[And to make Z Bardock even more shallow than he already is.]

Shallow character =/= bad writing

Toriyama Fanboy:
[First one, to tell the story of Goku's father and Goku's origins.]

Minus/Broly do this in a much shorter, and efficient way. They don't make you waste an hour of your time with a saiyan edgelord, his saiyan edgelord squad and Vegeta (if this is the story of Goku and his father, WHY TF is Vegeta in the movie?)

At least most of the characters work their way to obtain those abilities, or are just intrinsecal for their race. In Z Bardock's case, it’s like saying that Goku has the ability to unleash anyone's potential because Old Kai gave him his life force. Imo, the fact that Bardock was smart enough to notice how fishy Frieza's behaviour towards the saiyans was much better than just invading a planet that just so happened to be inhabitated by people with the ability to grant people visions for free.

[It lacks as much of an explanation as most of the above. Your point?]

My point? Z Bardock was a plot contrivance on itself, and for himself.

[Which happens quite a lot in Dragon Ball (Korin’s Tower and Snake Way come to mind).]

Korin never gave Goku the ability to spawn Senzu Beans or Divine Water out of his ass. And it took Goku some sweet fucking time to cross the Snake Way and learn from King Kai.

[Shallow character =/= bad writing]

Glorifying a shallow character over another one that's well written because of nostalgia is absurd.

Me (realized he blocked me after sending my last reply, but it still went through though):
[Minus/Broly do this in a much shorter, and efficient way. They don't make you waste an hour of your time with a saiyan edgelord, his saiyan edgelord squad and Vegeta (if this is the story of Goku and his father, WHY TF is Vegeta in the movie?)]

On what Flat Earth dimension is Vegeta being in the TV special an ACTUAL story flaw? Explain. Don't give me crap like "but he serves no purpose to the plot" when he bolsters Frieza's reasons to exterminate the Saiyan race and shows us why he (and his team) weren't present during Planet Vegeta's destruction.

[At least most of the characters work their way to obtain those abilities]

Doing the opposite isn’t bad storytelling (unless done incorrectly). And Bardock’s premonition isn’t a real power-up. They don’t boost his power level nor assist him in combat. It wasn’t even granted to him as a gift but to flaunt his race’s inevitable demise. Even if we were to agree he got those powers on a silver platter, he has NO control over them.

[or are just intrinsecal for their race.]

You do realize the Kanassaians bestowing visions onto their victim falls under "intrinsecal for their race," right?

[Imo, the fact that Bardock was smart enough to notice how fishy Frieza's behaviour towards the saiyans was much better than just invading a planet that just so happened to be inhabitated by people with the ability to grant people visions for free.]

Z Bardock became versed in Frieza's fishy behavior without the psychic powers. What his premonitions did beforehand was give him glimpses of Planet Vegeta's destruction.

[Korin never gave Goku the ability to spawn Senzu Beans or Divine Water out of his ass. And it took Goku some sweet fucking time to cross the Snake Way and learn from King Kai.]

Not the fucking point. Sanctuaries for prepping Goku happen to show up in the story when the enemies are too strong for him. Note how Tao Pai Pai whooped Goku's ass right in front of Korin's Tower. Note how Snake Way was right around the corner when Goku went to the afterlife. Korin's Tower and Snake Way happened to be there when the story needed them to progress.

[Glorifying a shallow character over another one that's well written]

Again, shallow protagonist doesn’t equate to bad writing as long as it’s intentional. Based on what Toriyama has shown of the Saiyan race, it’d be natural that Bardock would be a pretty damn awful person.

[because of nostalgia is absurd.]

No, what’s actually absurd is thinking terrible people equals terrible writing.

You know what would be OP?

A Dial Paramecia Devil Fruit

You get Natsu's powers basically

you can absorb anything and release whenever you want

Your entire body becomes an impact dial to receive damage and send it back

:crazwhat:

So fucking broken

It's basically Raizo's DF, but better, it's your entire body instead of just scrolls
Or the reverse of Urouge except you get the damaged after you unleash it, so like the reject dial :crazwhat:

Do you really have the spoilers for 1048? :neesama:

:wellwell: We're not talking about nothin' in there
Were you team Edelgard in the original game? Because I am
:catlewd:
Literally yes, I even accidentally joined her side over Rhea's before I knew the paths diverged.

I played all three major sides and I'm halfway through Silver Snow right now and like...

Dimitri is a menace. Claude doesn't do anything... Edelgard clearly is the best. Like, zero competition.
(I also married her)
