Maybe she was talking about accents? There’s Taiwanese Mandarin that’s a little different then Mainland Mandarin accents in that some words are pronounced differently and the speech sounds different, plus traditional characters are used rather than simplified.

Taiwanese as a dialect is very very different though, there’s 8 tones instead of 4 like in Mandarin and every word is pronounced differently
