While Sukiyaki was implied to have died by HIgurashi's schemes, his status was kept vague to us during Oden's flashback. He was cautious about going to the capital because he feared people would recognize him there (in present)
The biggest clue thus far is his interest in Kokeshi dolls and the fact that the poneglyph in Orochi's castle was guarded in some way by these dolls too.A very specific detail for Oda to drop in both cases.
