Original below. I had to add in the smoke on top of the dark red layer to replicate the original:

I see. Even the smoke in the original is annoying to deal with, so adding your own smoke effect would ease the coloring. Areas behind the smoke would have a bit of a light color. Black hair is let's say 100%. That area of the hair maybe 70% or 60% black. Same to say to the dark-red. I'll test the idea. To see if I can avoid adding smoke.
