But isn’t this an expression of the characters as written by Oda?

Oda writes Sanji to wear dresses at some point right? That’s in the manga. So if someone makes a joke that Sanji wears dresses, isn’t that referring to manga?

and Sanji fans obviously hate trans people as much as Sanji is written to hate them as well so that’s why they find it funny to make jokes about Zoro getting with Kiku.

these aren’t random statements that come from nowhere. Sanji is written to be transphobic and that’s the joke IN THE STORY ITSELF

For example if I say “I can’t wait for Sanji to learn that the Kiku he was swooning over is Trans”... This is a joke that is only funny because we know Sanji is transphobic. The specific characterization of Sanji written into the manga is what makes it funny

Are you saying that teenagers who are even just regular casual fans won’t get the meaning behind “I can’t wait until Sanji finds out that Kiku is trans”?

im sure every single fan will understand what this means as a joke and yes the joke is that Sanji will mostly likely feel shame or disgusts or both or rage or embarrassment or something negative

Of course Sanji doesn’t have a well formed internal life to have explicit Transphobic beliefs. No One piece character is that deep. But the mere fact that EVERYONE WILL UNDERSTAND THIS JOKE means that it’s a fact that Sanji is written as transphobic. He doesn’t have to have actual beliefs about it to still be it as per the way he is written

And you better believe ALL HIS FANS know this too and either choose to ignore it or some like our friend pero5 actually like this about him
