A part of me is worried Oda is going to make Nika more important than Luffy.

That is sadly already the case. Nika is the most ridiculous and op fruit in the world, Nika is now Luffy's most used method of fighting even when he doesn't really need it, Nika/Joyboy is the world's first pirate ever, the Giants worship Nika and even Dorry and Broggy treat Luffy more like their god than like their old friend, and all traits which seemed to be unique to Luffy are now being treated as belonging to Nika.
