Here is a thread to talk about something quite common in anime and manga : the fighting tournament arc. We saw it a LOT, in a fighting shonen it is almost prerequesite.

What do you think about those arcs ? Is it boring now ? What do you like in them ? their trope and their innovations ?

Can't remember the Chunin exams all that well, watched OG Naruto on TV when I was a kid, Grand Magic Games were OK and I haven't read Kengan or Baki.

I mean, Guts vs Federer was overall a pretty good fight, a bit weaker than the rest of the fights in Berserk but overall it kept me reading.

Nah, it’s my favorite because from start-to-finish, it’s the most character-focused tournament arc that I can think of. Every character present in the arc has development they go through that remains relevant even into the current storyline.

The battle is about who will lead the Vongola family
The winner gets to have the full rings (which are signs that you are main top member of the family )

Riles are simple :
No outside intervention or u lose
No tardy arrival or else you'll be disqualified
Gotta have your half ring
Batte doesn't end until u take the other half ring from your opponent

Xanxus was mad at iemutsu (Tsuna dad) who is the external advisor of Vongola family for chosing Tsuna while Vongola Ninth chose Xanxus
Both xanxus and Tsuna got powers that has to do with Fire

The guardins also got elementry abilities.

The battles are realy cool... check them out.
Especially the Guardians like Hikaru and Yamamoto
Mokura is also interesting as he uses chrome's body to manifest himself and fight.

Btw U should name it "Ring conflict " that's how the arc is called

You should've included Kengan Ashura's annihilation tournament. Don't really care for anything on the list. In OPM, it's arguably one of the least interesting parts of the show.

I watch every tournament arc but Kengan Ashura is the number one for me too, it is just the perfect tournament, nice to see other one having same opinion.

I like pretty much most of them but I really loved ( just pure enjoyment ):

1. Grand Magic Games.

2. Dark Tournament.

3. Sports Festival/Royal Knights Magic exam.

Grand magic games was from Fairy tail right?
I like a lot the concept behind the torunament because Mashima had multiple ideas but from me the ending killing a great tournament, you most like know what I mean(Erza...).
Dark Torunament was very great, love it and it was a hard decision to put it under Ashura.

I totally forget the Rooyal Knights Magic exam!!!
It was one of the best touurnament for me too, the concept behind the idea of Tabata was great.
I like how it have league of legends vibe and the fights and drama/twist in that tournament was sooo great.

For me the Royal Knights magic exam where one of the best so far even better then Dark TOurnament.

Laxus ( my favorite FT character ) was fucking killing it.

Erza part hmm I'm conflicted what to think.

Now Natsu vs Twin Dragons ( Sting and Rouge ).

I swear if not for #1 master monologue about the feelings of nakamas and this shit this would be one of the best endings to a fight in shonen.

Still was dope but I need to hold myself from puking after she gives this bullshit monologue. Natsu fucking nailed it.

Dark Tournament/Chunnin Exams for me. Cell Games wasn’t really a tournament in my eyes since only 3 people actually fought in the ring. Heaven’s Arena and Grand Magic Games were pretty rad too.

And yes, looks like the big brain peeps have already spoken in behalf of this absoulte beauty of an arc. The Kengan annihilation tournament most definitely shits on all the other options listed on this thread. Defacto number 1, as the greatest tournament arc to have ever graced fiction.

Every single character was fully fleshed out. Unquie yet not edgy. All very likable with fleshed out motives that seem realistic (very hard to find in other mangas). Every fight was beyound unpredictable, as alot of characters looked like they had a shot of becoming the new "King of Kengan".

200 chapters of the of brutal martial arts, bloodshed, and beatdowns mixed with hints of political powerplays behind the scences makes this the most consistent, and well excuceted tournament there is. Coupled with such a badass mc that is Ohma (unlike the regular mcs that are beaches) , it takes this arc, and manga to top tier territory.


If you are choosing anything else on the list, you might not have read or even heard of Kengan Ashura.

Record of Ragnarok has an amazing tournament. Literally the entire manga thus far is a tournament fight. A fight between Gods and humans to save humankind. Gods from various different mythologies like Thor, Zeus, Shiva, etc, and very well known human representatives, like Adam, Lu Bu, etc, I don't wanna spoil it for you peeps.

The fights are amazing. Literally some of the best I've seen. The entire setting is great, and often unpredictable and keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time.
