Character Discussion Thematic identities.

#1
It's interesting how Oda has been crafting thematic identities for each of the Yonko crews:
  • Big Mom Pirates - food-based
  • Beast Pirates - ancient animals
  • Blackbeard Pirates - escaped criminals
  • Buggy's Cross Guild - former victims of the Straw Hats
  • Red-Haired Pirates - non-devil fruit users
  • Whitebeard Pirates - "second best" figures, despite the captain being the world's strongest man
This "second best" theme is reflected across Whitebeard’s commanders:
  • Marco the Phoenix is second to dragons in mythical symbolism
  • Fire (Ace) was portrayed as inferior to magma (Akainu)
  • Diamond (Jozu) is second to kairoseki (seastone)
  • Vista, though skilled, is second to Mihawk. Besides Zoro, he seems to be the only swordsman who cares about the WSS title
  • Izo, while formidable, is depicted as a second-rate shooter compared to Yasopp
And the pattern continues with other commanders.

Now, when it comes to the Straw Hats, Oda has subtly embedded antagonistic or dark archetypes into their identities. It's an ironic contrast given that they are the protagonists, yet it's a fitting theme against the divine or saintly imagery of the World Government and the Celestial Dragons.
  • Luffy “Sun God”: Despite the title, his power comes from a devil fruit, and the “D.” clan is the nemesis of the gods (the Celestials).
  • Zoro “King of Hell”: portrays him as a dark lord.
  • Sanji “Ifrit Jambe”: portrays him a demon.
  • Jinbe “Former Sichibukai”: portrays him a warlord/fallen knight.
  • Robin “Demonio Fleur”: portrays her as a demon.
  • Franky “Iron Pirate”: portrays him as a juggernaut
  • Brook “Soul King”: portrays him as a phantom
  • Chopper “Monster Point”: portrays him as a beast
  • Nami “Sorcerer of Weather”: Portrays her as a sorcerer/witch
  • Usopp “God Usopp”: portrays him as a trickster.
Why this is interesting? It may foreshadow something. For instance:
1. To be truly God, Luffy needs to master his fruit to defeat his enemies. So far gear 5 is still at early stage.
2. Zoro needs to master conquerors' haki
3. Sanji and Robin. Sanji had stealth black title, while Robin used to be in underground organization specializing in assassination. They need to master speed. Kizaru says in 1127, acceleration is power. Sanji need to master travel speed, while Robin would be more about teleportation and limbs regeneration.
4. Jimbei will likely fight God's or Holy Knights
5. Brook's awakening will likely rule over souls and make him a necromancer. Given how we've shown three times that you can control it: through the painting color (in little garden), shadows (in thriller bark) and transferred souls (whole cake). His control may be through music like Utta, given how Gunko kinda highlight it.
6. Franky would be an unstoppable force. So far it's been true. Despite him not being in the monster 3, he never loses.
7. If chopper really represents beast, and now he's able to do it with only 2 rumble balls, he will likely turn behemoth, a mythical creature. So far, all hito hito users have been mythical or more like spiritual since they represent Gods. Given the size of many Zoan transformation, monster point is still small. Hito hito transformation is usually bigger too "Luffy Giant form and the Budha form easily dwarf monster point.
8. Nami too, will work on instaneous speed like magic. Her attack speed has improved a lot compared to when she first used the climatact against Ms. Double finger. Back then, she had to blow them to create small cloud, now her clouds is more instaneous, but Gunko shows her that her charging speed is slow. She needs to be able to shoot her lightning the way she uses her gust sword
9. Lastly Ussop may be end up to be the best strategist from the group to cause enemies's downfall. He could be the one shooting the redline flat without many victims.

You gave me a good idea about an Usopp power up theory thanks.
