It didn’t even begin lol. Zoro isn’t facing anyone who wants to become the WSS, this is that only has one two people the first is the challenger(Zoro) and the title holder(Mihawk) there are no swordsmen who came across Zoro to challenge and rival him to his dream which makes it the most boring journey.
I can understand a bit for Sanji. The SH never went on a random trip, so they won't find all blue (located unknown).
As for information gathering:
- for Paradise, if there's any, Zeff would have it.
- for New World, except Fishman Island and Wano, Sanji is in no situation for that. Fishman Island he already found all blue with the mermaids, and Wano is a closed country with no outside knowledge (and SH in stealth mode during the arc).

Mihawk couldn't even mid dif Vista but Zoro can?
Zoro is first commander lvl
Has more feats
Showed better sword skills
And showed much better haki than Vista
Vista doesn't have a single W to his belt
So yeah until Vista shows more than clashing for a brief moment with Mihawk Zoro Mid difs
I will be frank he doesnt have a lot of competition
and mihawk should not be the sole top tier he fights
shiryu doesnt command the potrayal needed and king was a decent stepping stone
last couple fights could make it worth it
if mihawk lives up to expectation and the gorosei are cracked , essentially legends that have traversed through time, then the conversation of being the strongest swordman in history isnt far fetched because then he would have accomplished something most of the other greats didnt.

Having Mihawk train Zoro is only a fuckup when Zoro and Mihawk do not fight for real. Which is a very big possibility, unfortunately.
But even that would be salvageable, if awkward, by introducing a stronger foe than Mihawk.
For thousand chapters we did not know of the big bad Imu that Luffy/Nika is going to take down. The same could happen to Zoro as well.

stop comparing WSS to sports. Or fencing. Or to kendo. There are no referees or rules here.
the two most obvious reasons you should stop comparing these things is
1. it’s a fucking life and death fight. We the readers know that Zoro won’t kill Mihawk because this is a kids manga written for little kids. But in the story it’s not presented as though Zoro will hold back. Zoro will launch his fucking mountain cutting attacks AT FULL POWER towards mihawk and the only reason mihawk doesn’t die is because he’s a fucking superhuman. And vice versa. Mihawk and Zoro will be sending life threatening attacks towards each other over and over again. they are legitimately trying to kill one another. This is not how sports work. There is no sport where death is the intended outcome of the sport.
2. THERE IS NO REWARD. This seems to fly over everyone’s heads. Zoro doesn’t get anything from becoming WSS. Same way Mihawk never got anything from it. In fact Mihawk doesn’t even have house and has to farm his own fucking food because he doesn’t even have money. Unlike the One piece and the pirate king title where even if the one piece isn’t money, the people in the story think it’s money and so they go after it. People expect a reward for becoming pirate king. People know THERE IS NO REWARD for becoming WSS. Zoro and mihawk simply want the WSS titles because they are ambitious for the sake of ambition itself. There is no sport that works like this too. There is no athlete who does their sport for no reward and just to say they did the thing.

Yeah if you want to say this is the LONGEST RUNNING hyped match then maybe. Though of course there’s Berserk with Griffith and Gutz but since the author died it’s fair to say that has kind of fizzled out.
If you want to talk about the length of time it’s been set up for this fight then fine… If you want to talk about the actual quality and meat of this conflict then hell fucking no.
And the reason so simple, both Zoro and mihawk are way too shallow of characters for their rivalry to be considered that good in itself.
also doesn’t help that they are side characters and not main characters… For example the Sasuke and Naruto rivalry is LEAPS AND BOUNDS better than Zoro and mihawk
