Break Week Torishima's recent criticism about One Piece

SL is a free webtoon whose shelf-life is linked to clicks and ads, and can be prolonged longer than a printed series because of the difference in costs between the two. SL was only picked up for print after online engagement already proved it to be a good return on investment.
As part of Jump, OP would need to receive enough votes in the first 20-30 chapters from actual buyers of the paperback for the series to be greenlit further.
Oh my bad then. I retract my statement.
Also thank god nobody's paying to read that slop LMFAO

I think bleach and Naruto wouldn’t get cancelled. HxH too

Dragon ball would need to be marketed as a comedy gag manga much more and it would survive
Hunter X Hunter is a weird one just because the Hunter Exam is somewhat divisive

Some people really like it and others think it's really slow paced

Just off watching reactions of the 2011 HxH anime people typically lose interest around the cooking section/trick tower

OG Dragon Ball is another one that as you said would have to be marketed well to fly. Once it starts picking up then I think it would be fine
Post automatically merged:

Bleach is pretty fast paced too, the spirit detective part of the story is only the first 5 chapters or so

One Piece is the only story out of the big 3 that starts really slows and it shows in its popularity in the west
@Roo Bleach would be even more fucked than One Piece

You're misremembering the spirit detective arc last well over 5 chapters

It's literally like the first 50 chapters of the manga

The part of Bleach that pretty much everybody acknowledges is unbearably slow and uninteresting relative to SS and everything after

It doesn't stand a chance in 2025

Naruto is the only one of the big 3 that would make it if the serialization started today imo

HxH would also not work in this context, since it wouldn't be a brand-new series like OP, Naruto, or Bleach. Togashi already had connections within the manga industry, and people were expecting a return after YYH's swift ending.

It's the same thing we're seeing live with Modulo: the series has started pretty slowly and it should tank soon if the rhythm doesn't improve, but because it's from a known quantity--GeGe--and because it's the spin-off/bastardized sequel of a popular product whose anime is still rolling--JJK--it'll likely be allowed to continue even if audience response is tepid.

Fair enough I almost forgot that Togashi wrote YYH prior to HxH for some reason

At this point anime is normalized to the point where any manga can really get picked up as long as it's not extremely problematic (i.e depicting serious things like murder, rape, substance abuse just for the sake of doing that).
Well, these kind of animes are clearly intented to target the specific audience just like how there are movies covering the same kind of topics. So I don't see a reason to view these animes as problematic as you think.

That's why it's a misconception how people view animes as pure kids content - although many people view animes way more normally than before - but as matter of facts, there exist some crazy and serious animes. Often, there are very underrated animes with some average cover but when you actually watch it, it's definitely not for the average shonen fan. "From the New World" is an example - an underrated anime I've watched when I began binge watching seinen animes.

Ofc there are both mangas and manhwas when characters get raped just for the plot to move forward. It annoys me as well when this is used as active fuel to make the protagonist act.

Yyh is Like the forgotten neglected Child
I said this multiple times before but I want the people who made the MP100 anime to make a YYH remake.

Fair point honestly.

I think one reason sometimes overlooked about why maybe there are less quality shonen is also maybe the low birth rates in Japan? It may seem silly, but,if Japan becomes older as a nation, there is less audience for typical shonen stuff and more for adult stuff. And also less new young writers to create the stories

It literally almost got canceled irl irrc, it just starts way too slow. Nowadays mangas are way more fast paced and WSJ is more demanding
I have seen new Mangas with much faster pacing than early OP and they still got axed within just 20-40 chapters of first release...

This one for example was slightly following the same formula that JJK, CSM, and MHA had (young protagonist with adult mentor figure guiding them) even had some good designs here and there

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hunters_Guild:_Red_Hood

But it IMMEDIATELY GOT AXED in just 18 chapters (5 months)... harsh.

Shonen Jump these days is very strict. There's a reason no active running series right now is considered among the "Top" besides OP, when previously we had MHA, JJK, and KNY, but they all ended. Now there's nothing except OP hogging the covers.

I am just glad Akira isn't ruling over jump, for years i have seen too much manga getting axed before they reach their full potential. Jump is actually really famous for axing series at this point it can be considered a cemetery. :kayneshrug:

Is this real? Damn, this man isn't holding back.

Lolda needs editors like this guy. It doesn't matter whether he's right or not. It's about editors voicing their own opinion to Oda's scripts instead of Yes editors.
If I recall correctly, Torishima was indirectly the reason we got Cell cause he kept criticising Toriyama's Android Saga villains until we got Perfect Cell.

Imagine the Android Saga with just Gero and Android 19 as the primary antagonists. :kriwhat:

I do agree that while I like the storyline, the chapters often feel rushed. For example, this week, Dragon's panels were all like 1-2 panels max with most of his story being explained through writing. We don't see what he feels, we are explained what he feels like.
It's not something that a lot of manga reader talk about, but more often than not I'm feeling that Oda creates his chapters expecting that the anime fills the gaps with his panels, and that just isn't fair to his readers.
Reading One piece nowadays feels like reading the storyboard of the anime. :lusalty:
