Break Week Wano’s Dialogue Makes Me Want To Jump Off A Bridge

Kaido: “Worororo, I’m having fun, Lin Lin”

^At no other point in the past has Oda ever had his antagonists have to explicitly state their emotions, it has always been apparent from their actions how they are feeling. Oda was free to show, not tell. But since Kaido has no consistent character whatsoever, and because there is literally nothing else to be discussed since Wano has no plot, we get dialogue bubbles dedicated to characters just explicitly stating their emotions. Lmfao

Kaido to Luffy: “When you have fun, you smile!”

Tell me more, Goda you revolutionary

Kaido about 50 times: “What? X attack actually injured me? How is this possible?”

See the problem with writing an invincible antagonist who takes ambiguous damage, while also not being a talented enough artist to communicate via your actual art when said invincible character actually takes damage,

Is that now you have to devote dialogue bubbles to simply communicating basic information about the progress of the fight to the reader, instead of using dialogue bubbles to communicate much more important information. Its unclear just from reading the fight if Kaido is actually being injured, so Kaido has to actually speak out loud to let us know when he’s injured since we can’t trust our eyes when we’re watching him get clobbered left and right.

It’s a good thing nothing important actually happens in Wano, or these wasted moments of dialogue would actually have counted for a lot more.

I’m glad even that Reddit post shows users acknowledging how terrible Wano’s dialogue is lol.

He literally said he wants to help this nation and make it one where people can eat
I didn’t say he won’t defeat kaido but that doesn’t mean he can have fun since he recently became as strong as a yonko compare to before when he was not as strong

wrong

Luffy came to Wano to rescue it from Kaido because Kin'emon and Momo asked for his help

go re-read Zou
Luffy’s original plan with law did not have anything to do with the citizens itself

Yeah, imo in term of action Kaido vs Luffy was actually pretty great, one of his best fights (although too many cuts).
But the tone... the tone... it felt so off.
It never felt like Luffy hated Kaido or wanted to see him gone as much as he did with villlains like Crocodile/Doffy, even in the end.
I guess that was on purpose because of the Joyboy thing, but because of it the finisher doesns't feel as intense/cathartic as those in previous fights despite Kaido being the big bad guy of an extremely long saga.
