General & Others What do you think about the fights in One Piece?

Honestly, there are four factors that matter to me:
  • Strategy
  • Creativity
  • Emotional weight
  • Choreography

I’d say Oda is good when it comes to emotional weight, and decent at strategy. However, when it comes to creativity and choreography, he’s downright awful. Most Naruto fights rely heavily on strategy and choreography, where every tiny movement from the characters feels important.

Even anime that focus much more on choreography, like Dragon Ball for example, manage to pull it off in an amazing way. In fact, Dragon Ball is one of the best manga in history at doing this. If you’ve never read the Dragon Ball manga and only watched the anime, you might not understand why Toriyama was so highly praised as the creator of Dragon Ball.

The fights in Dragon Ball are so well choreographed in the manga that you can understand what’s happening just by looking at the page. It’s like Toriyama is guiding your eyes exactly where they need to go. And since the fights are basically just Goku trading punches with someone else, the entire story is sort of built around martial arts, which made it a very special manga.

When it comes to choreography, One Piece has basically nothing to say about it. That’s honestly a point that has always bothered me a lot.

Strategy > One Piece is not a strategic battle manga. So I don't think it's a fair point to compare it with.

Creativity > Dead wrong. One Piece is ALL ABOUT creativity. You may confusing creativity here with strategic creativity. It might not be the badass creativity you crave but it's amazingly creative.

Emotional weight > Is amazingly good at it. Also it's not always obvious to the casual reader or the ranting fanbase

Choregraphy > Is a point that is no worthy to compare One Piece to. OP does not deliver basic exchange but big hits. As such, there is no choregraphy, and you are confusing it with lisibility.

Lisibility > Like I said, One PIece is not delivering exchange, so Oda will not focus on the lisibility of basic exchanges like this:

Which will be reserved for smaller panels and could indeed been seen as less readible.

BUT

He seems to be COMPLETELY focusing on BIG hits. Where the readibility is clear.

It's a problem to compare different types of manga with each others.

One Piece is not focusing on fight the same way as other shonen. This is something to take into consideration and not invisibilize before making judgments.

Pretty bad; it all comes down to who can throw down the stronger attack post timeskip. Now Oda is having a shockwave craze and Haki no-touching-each-other attacks.

Pre-timeskip was a bit better with Zoro and Luffy using strategy or learning how to counter their opponents in a comedic way, such as Luffy figuring out how to defeat Crocodile by being Water Luffy and eventually using blood. Zoro vs. Mr. 1 and how he learned to cut steel.

It also doesnt help that Usopp and Nami are too weak to be given 1 vs 1 fights.

You can clearly see when he's rushing and when he's actually enjoying what he's drawing.
It has been rare for fights lately.

I'd say he found the right style for the M3 pre TS but his ideas are less interesting for them post TS.

You can still find some decent moments though.
