Character Discussion What if Imu was originally a good guy?

A common thread amongst the strongest characters in One Piece. Most of them fight on behalf of others. Think of: Luffy, Shanks, Roger, WB.

This isn’t a coincidence. Fighting on behalf of others allowed these characters to develop immense wills that comparable characters didn’t.

Think of Luffy and Kid. They are very similar, however Kid mostly fights for himself whereas Luffy mostly fights for others. As a result, Luffy has gotten more experience and overall developed stronger haki.

Given that Imu is king of the world, what if once upon a time, he was not too different from Luffy? He united the kingdoms of the world and stood up to an oppressive Lunarian regime.

He fought to defend his friends and his people and ultimately triumphed. However it was only after this, after he became king of the world, did Imu become evil?

imo this would be a good contrast between Imu and characters like Teach and Kaido who are entirely selfish and are only strong because they are freaks of nature.

Imu, like Luffy, has the power to bring people to his side. It’s how he created the WG. However ultimately, he used this power to then oppress the world rather than free it, as Luffy will inevitably do.

I am gonna be real, any attempts to make Imu less than pure evil will just feel pretty weird given the system they enable and seemingly outright created when it comes to the WG. Like, if you are even partially repsobile for Charlos behaving like he does you ever havign beewn good person becoems pretty doubtful in my mind. Also, you know, the whole "lets erase and island just because it is close to us and it serves as a nice tool to use the new superweapon" shit Imu did. Might be controsverial but not exactly seeing much similarity with Luffy beign set up here.
