Questions & Mysteries What if the D means

#4
You know I had the same though last night. What if Joyboy was actually a nickname like Strawhat for luffy. Why would it be Joyboy? Because of the Nika fruit the as we saw make Luffy in Nika form lough a lot and almost uncontrollably.

So what would his name be? It could be Davy Jones indeed. Why? Well we know Joyboy was the first pirate and we know Davy was coursed by the devil himself because he was to greedy well what if coursed meant defeated in the end like we know.

The story in the end is passed down and variation can be made and the result was what we know now with all the alteration done to it.

Also the davy back fight might have been a recruitment method done by Joyboy silly games to convince people to join him

It's possible it could be "Davy". I hesitate to say that for certain, though. If only because Davy Jones seems to be positioned more as a "villain" at the moment, with the ties to Blackbeard and Rocks. And even Foxy. And "forcing" people to join your crew doesn't seem like something someone like Luffy would want to do. The "good" pirates would want you to join their crew because you wanted to, not because you were forced to. But, the Davy Back Fights could have been something that was just supposed to be for fun that got twisted by history and other pirates abusing it over the years, so it's hard to say.

And "Dawn" is equally as likely. It's just that it's...boring? It's a little too simple and obvious, for my tastes. It's maybe the most likely, but I'm hoping for something else.

"Devil" is another possibility. Tying the D Clan closer to the creation of the Devil Fruits. But, again, it's pretty simple.

"Destruction" or something along those lines would be a more interesting reveal. And I think something "negative" like that would actually fit with most of their actions. Most people with the Will of D are trying to destroy something in order to build something else to take it's place. It'd be all about tearing down the old system to make way for something new. I think it'd make sense for Imu to fear something like that. A Clan that's all about "progress" and replacing old things with new things.

"Dead". As in "We are already dead". Tying into the idea that all these people may have been reincarnated and reborn several times over the centuries. I could see that being a interesting reveal. Everyone with a D-initial had a past life during the Void Century or even farther back in the First World.

"Dragon" is another possibility, given my own theories about the Dragon Races eventually playing a bigger part in the story down the road. But, I'll admit, that's a little "simple" in it's own way, too. It doesn't really make for a interesting reveal, on it's own. As part of a bigger "Dragon Races" reveal sure, but that also being the D would be a little redundant, in a way.

"Dictator". It would be interesting if they revealed that the D-Clan were basically the original Celestial Dragons. The original rulers of the world who enslaved everyone else. It would give the story a interesting sense of cyclical history. The slave master turning into the slaves themselves, punished for the crimes of their ancestors. And it would justify some of the Celestial Dragon's hatred of the D-Clan a bit, if they were the original ones enslaving everyone else.

"Dream Eater" is another one that I've speculated on before. Basically, it takes Rosinate's line about "The D will EATyou", and makes it literal. Lines that we origianlly think are being "poetic" often turn out to be PAINFULLY literal in this story, after all. If the D-Clan were somehow behind the creation of the Devil Fruits, or somehow mined "Dream Energy" in it's raw form via the Forbidden Sun, then it could be that the D-Clan literally fed on the "dreams" of their slaves. Using the "Dream Energy" of the slaves in order to power their civilization. It's a little far-fetched, but I don't know if it's too far-fetched for One Piece.

"Dateable"? Okay, this is just me being silly. But, it would be interesting if everyone with a D-initial was actually one of the family lines pre-approved to court Imu or any other Celestial Dragon or something. The D-initial marking them as "approved" "dateable" suitors. Turning this entire manga into a otome visual novel. This is a joke...but Oda does love his jokes. The D-inital could turn out to be one big joke.

There is a possibility that's been rattling around in my head for a while. And I might as well write it out, just to see if it holds up, even a little. It's pretty unlikely, but I'm a little fond of the idea.

I feel like it's possible that the Will of D could actually be...the Will of "Domo".

Now, "Domo" is actually a pretty interesting word in Japanese. It actually has four different meanings depending on the context.

https://www.japanesepod101.com/less...ions-answered-by-hiroko-9-what-does-domo-mean

It can mean "Hello", a greeting.

It can mean "Thanks", a casual way to show appreciation.

It can mean "Very", a way to stress how much you mean something.

And it can mean "Sorry", a casual apology.

I feel like such a versatile word with many meanings would appeal to Oda. I feel like Oda loves to work with wordplay and changing up expectations. So, I feel like a word that can mean many different things would appeal to Oda, as a reveal for the long-speculated initial. It'd give Oda another chance to make ANOTHER reveal later, about which meaning he's actually trying to convey to the audience.

And I think the reveal of the D being "The Will of Domo" could actually be a really touching scene in the manga.

Because it would mean that this entire story has been a long journey to just say one word to someone who needs to hear it. This entire time, we've been on a journey just to try and heal a relationship with a word. And we know that there IS some sort of fated meeting coming, from the Chapter 1138 Mural and the Harley Text. "They will surely meet again". And when they meet again...what's the first thing "they" will say to each other?

"Domo". "Hello". "Thanks". "Sorry." A word that can start to heal a relationship that's been wounded since the First World.

This would mean that this entire time, hundreds of people all around the world have been trying to get this message to this person, whoever they are. Passing this simple message down their family lines for generations. Just so they wouldn't forget. Millions of people over the centuries, all over the world, all trying to say "Thank you" or "Sorry" to a person. Probably without that person ever realizing what that message actually meant.

"Hello". I'm glad we get to finally meet again.

"Thanks". Thank you for all you've done over the centuries. Thanks you for trying to help this world. Thank you for helping keep this fun world of ours spinning.

"Sorry." Sorry for what happened to you. Sorry for using you. Sorry for you being hurt because of us. Sorry for what our ancestors did to you.

Can a single word change the fate of a entire world? Can one word heal centuries of pain? Travelling thousands of miles over the course of thousands of years...all for the chance to say a single word...that would take a lot of Will, indeed. How Romantic!

"Domo" is a relatively simple word on the surface. But, it hides hidden depths. I feel like it's kind of perfect for One Piece, in a way.

Plus, in a way, it acts as a interesting counterpoint to Blackbeard's three skulls. Instead of being filled with the grudges of three generations worth of pirates, Luffy is instead trying to communicate the appreciation and joy of the entire world in three different ways.

I feel like "Domo" actually fits Luffy pretty well. It's casual, and almost flippant. But, it would be sincere. It's not too formal so that you couldn't imagine someone like Luffy saying it. And it would almost be comical how casual he's being. And I feel like it would have to be Luffy who eventually gets to relay the message to it's intended recipient, whoever that may turn out to be. He's the main character. He's a got the Will of D. Luffy would be the one to say it.

As for who this message could be for? It could be Imu, who's completely misunderstood what was trying to be conveyed by the D, because Imu cut everyone off and doesn't talk to anyone outside their inner circle. It could be the Dragon Race, who may have been wrongfully imprisoned and had their planet stolen from them. Or it could be someone else. I do like the idea of this entire story being the result of a misunderstanding, in some way. A failure to communicate. Which is ironic, given how much Oda loves wordplay and puns.

It's cornball. But, I like it. It could be a really nice scene for the ending of the manga, if Oda does it right. Plus, it'd be a pretty good lesson for the kids in the audience: There's always time to apologize or to say "thank you" to someone. I'll admit, though, it would be VERY Japanese. Going on a long journey around the world, just to finally find a way to be polite? And it wouldn't translate into other languages very well. But, I can't help but like this kind of thing. I'm just imagining all the characters in the story saying "Domo" around the world in a big montage, and it kind of brings a smile to my face. I'm a sucker for all the characters coming together to achieve something, and saying "Thank You" and "I'm sorry" to someone in order to save their world kind of fits the bill.

If there's any time where you're allowed to be a little corny, it's at the end of your long story, after all.
