Character Discussion What is your favorite Zoro line?

People don't hate Zoro, people, me included, like Zoro but hate the incredible Wank that he's given.
Zoro is a perfect prototype for cool guy in the Shonen that One Piece is, like Rukawa, Vegeta, Sasuke, etc.
It's a great archetype, but I personally hate when people just have to shit on other character (other archetypes) in an endless childish race to say that Zoro is the coolest.
When I was 14 Zoro was my favourite, now my favourites are almost non-existant, but I was closer to the "finding yourself" of Usopp. Lol, remember when Usopp was relevant.
the reason why you feel that people wank zoro is because its basically his role in the story.

his goal is to be the strongest so obviously Oda will always have him do thing insane that even luffy might fail to do like take luffy's pain, feared worldwide cause of his strenght as pirate hunter, cut kaido like oden, stop hakkai, beat thougher than kaido.

and it wont stop there.

Oda is doing this so that when Zoro become officialy the strongest people dont doubt his strenght.

Archetype:
"a very typical example of a certain person or thing."

"the original pattern or model of which all things of the same type are representations or copies"

You're not talking about storytelling, you're talking about a surface level appeal.
I believe they are both true in the respect that most people in here care, the "strong, cool, cold and unfased" type of character.
He is the typical example of a character like Rukawa. Strong, cool, happy to find a new challenger.
he examples for sasuke or Vegeta are more surface level.

This is when I became a fan, I remember reading this in my school library.

Zoro: Whewwww!!!
My sword will not rest until it is the greatest in the world...

Cabaji: What do you think you're...!!

** cuts stomach open **
Zoro: Is this handicap satisfactory?
(bite)
Why don't I show you just how much higher a level I'm on than you.

I never followed Slam Dunk, but based on your other examples it seems like you're referring to this:
"Rukawa is reserved, quiet, cool, selfish, insensitive and very cold. "

Zoro isn't selfish or insensitive, that's all day one stuff with from interacting with Ruka to his time with Yasu and beyond. It's been clear throughout the entire series that he doesn't see his goal in a vacuum as Luffy becoming pirate king has always been just as important if not more important. He'd never run from an enemy like Jeice or Katakuri, he'd never accept help against a guy like King even when he was on borrowed time, he'd never flake out on Luffy like half of the crew have already done

Idk, you say a problem is making comparisons to other characters and it's something you're doing right here. I mean I would shift that perspective to Law and Kid, who actually fit the rival archetype

My friend, maybe I am not being clear. I am not saying that Rukawa and Zoro are the same, but that they follow a similar archetype, of the cool, talented, hard working prodigy who is also a bit misterious and cool in front of danger.
Just this.
Not that they are the same character, but that they are quite similar on this kind of Shonen trope.
Sadly, I wish Zoro had more time to show personality, but this is something that the whole crew lacks, since they get very little time to show anything beside their "core" aspects.

But what I'm saying is that you're on the surface because that doesn't even address the core aspects we do see. This thread shows you that people are every bit as likely to pick some earnest and selfless moment as they are to pick something bad ass. The reason people actually like Zoro is very largely because he's not like those characters you mentioned. He wouldn't BE Zoro if he didn't eat that dirty rice ball off the ground or carry Luffy's cage back to town. You can't say "kinda like them except for how he's not" because that just means he isn't like them. His sacrifice against Kuma isn't like Vegeta selling himself for Majin strength and then being noble because he came up short, for example.

I think you might honestly be a bigger Zoro fan than you even used to be if you take the time to think it through.

Zoro hasn't done anything except fight for the last 10 years though, that's the problem.
Maybe I am not explaining myself properly, let me try another way.
Zoro panders to the same kind of fans that are fan of the other I mentioned above, is this any clearer?

It's not that I don't understand, it's that I think it's wrong. It's ironic because people who say Zoro gets by on shallow reasons are really just being shallow about projecting what they see themselves

Pandering is your understanding but personally, the reason I even quoted you is because I don't like those characters and they sort of ruin their stories for me . Zoro gets even less screentime than Sanji so "pandering" doesn't make sense. If anything, it comes back around to reinforcing the fact that Zoro isn't about "stealing the spotlight" in any sort of way.

From the moment he said "you've got yourself a pirate" he's been motivated throughout the series out of loyalty that goes beyond his own ambition. You really can't talk about his appeal if you don't mention that. Again look at this man saving fucking Lucci and Kaku

I mean tldr; those are not even the sort of characters the mangaka line him up with
