Character Discussion What makes you like Luffy

#1
I used to be Luffy's fan pre-timeskip but lately I wish I don't see him on panels. I automatically view him as a chosen one who can be so stubborn and do whatever as plot wants. I cannot feel his struggle, pain, or emotions that Oda has tried to portray about him. Unlike other mangas where MC is not the only one who gets special treatment, when Luffy fight with strong enemy, I immediately imagine that Luffy will get sudden power up and then fodderize enemy eventually. This belief makes me lose interest in all Luffy fights and development.

With this, I want to understand why he still keep wining popular poll and perhaps I can change my mind and enjoy Luffy panels again.

Where was Luffy given free ride post timeskip like Zoro? Luffy has struggled all the way to Kaidou. And still struggling and failing many times. Which post timeskip enemy did he fodderize ? What special treatment? Did Oda choose Zoro or Luffy to tank attack that could be strongest we have seen so far?
Infact Oda has given more special treatment preskip than post skip. Luffy is stubborn from preskip too. This tells that you were never a Luffy fan. You just used excuse of I used to be Luffy fan to put your agenda. That sells harder than beginning with I hate Luffy?
And no one can change your mind as your thread was perceived bias.

I want to understand why he still keep
I think he wins popularity polls because he is the MC

But the reason i love luffy is mainly coz he is still unpredicrable 1000 chapters into the story... It is unprecedented to me that a main character can still surprise me in a story even 1/3 as long as One piece

i think recently my favorite luffy moment in Wano is him getting himself infected by Queen’s virus in the prison... It was so surprising yet in character and i got reminded again why he is the best MC for a series this long

Thats it for me, there is no way any other character in OP could be the MC of a series this long... My favorite character in the series is Zoro and even then i know one of the reasons i like him so much is because he is a good side character. He is very good whenever he is around which is not very often. Zoro aa he is right now wouldnt work as the MC since i doubt he would make aa surprising a decisiom as Luffy did in the prison. And so Zoeo couldnt sustain 1000 chapters of that kind of engagement

There are flaws with the way Luffy is written of course but the one grrat achievement with his character is that there cannot be a better MC for this series

No one has to change your mind, it's fine if you don't like him.
One Piece was always Luffy's show anyway, he hasn't changed much, he is still as confident as he was in the beginning. Exactly like some other characters and I saw nobody complaining about other characters being cocky or confident.
The other straw hats still have their moments (Zoro in Punk Hazard defeated a Logia without using CoA, he shined in Dressrosa and is shining now in Wano), Brook and Nami had their moments in WCI and all the straw hats will have their 1v1 in Wano.

If anything it's the other characters (SN, revolutionaries) that people wanted to see so much in action that are stealing straw hats panel time.

Besides this is a shonen, the MC isn't supposed to change the way he behaves every godamn arc just because some shit happens that he overcame anyway (otherwise he dies, his friends die and the serie ends).

I wasn't a big fan of Luffy at first, I started liking him during Arlong Park and became a real fan during Alabasta arc. The way he fights, the way he treats and defends his friend, his simple view of life, his love for meat and freedom.

Lol maybe. But I got extremely excited when Luffy reveal gear 2 in EL. But now it feel meh when he got future sight, aCoa, aCoc.
Struggling all the way to Kaido? I don't feel any tension like Sabody arc or EL. Special treatment preskip? He admitted defeat to Kusan, begged Ivankov for power, pathetically run way during Sabody. All of these make Luffy interesting in my opinion. In addition, his main enemies has never been hyped as much as Kaido or Yonkos.

But look at him now. Keep charging to the "world strongest" without any consequence, turn prison into training camp, get tons of power up all of sudden, and gonna fodderize Kaido 1 on 1. Zoro? He tanks attack and then he got consequence. Luffy? you know what happens next. I can't tell much as it will be spoiler. If you can't see the difference good for you.

TBH, I expect some idea to change my mind so that I can enjoy OP more. But it seems you just worship Luffy and no one can criticizes about him.
Post automatically merged:

I also wank Sanji and other strawhats to be honest. But Zoro seems to be the only one except Luffy who got a chance from Oda.

I always find it weird when One Piece is described as “Luffy’s show.” To me, in a way I get that he’s the leading main character, which even shonen manga tends to need due to being character focused in the first place, but then again, in another way it doesn’t feel like “Luffy’s show” for how much focus on development is focused on in other parts of the world independent from him, like how Oden’s flashback went on for more than 10 chapters without having to include Luffy himself.

I can understand the struggle of seeing Luffy a lot. At times it seems like overexposure and that other characters don't get as much focus as they could.

I enjoyed Luffy more pre-timeskip but I still like him. His fights are still enjoyable to me even if he learns something mid-fight that is pretty essential to his win and seems convenient or when he refuses to go down despite being pounded on for hours. Those parts of his fights are kinda irritating but I've gotten used to them and that's just Luffy. Seeing G4 in action is always cool to me.

I won't say I always enjoy Luffy but he has his moments for me. Sometimes I find him funny and he also some pretty cool moments post-timeskip as well. Tension isn't always there post-timeskip but I'm still engaged in the story and Luffy's fights.

I couldn't have said it better. I think exactly the same.

This is true. The only post-TS arc in which I have felt tension was WCI.

Not the biggest Luffy fan but one thing I like about him is what he represents in the story. Luffy is the perfect balance between Justice (Akainu) and freedom (Blackbeard). It’s fitting tha those two are Luffy’s arch nemesis and that he will be the one to take those two down and lead the new era.

He states simple sweet meaningful things with exclamation marks

"NAMI ! YOU ARE MY NAKAMA!"

"SHUT UP ! LET'S GOO!"

"I DON'T CARE WHO YOU ARE OR WHERE YOU'RE FROM! BUT I WILL SURPASS YOU !!"

" SAY YOU WANNA LIVE!"

He live by his dream. Every action of his, he does for the sake to attain his dream.

He does and executes what he sets his heart to. Simple actions but persevering.

He adapts combatively. He used water and blood to go around things he cant hit. He learns Soru and King's Haki offense by visual learning.

He recognizes things beyond physicalities yet he cant put it into words and just say things about physicalities (Crybaby, Pineapple Guy, Torao, Flamingo)

Actually, with Punk Hazard and Dressrosa focusing considerably on Law, the Levely, the Oden flashback, etc., I think that has helped him from being overexposed, even when considering he’s the leading main character.
