I think what started it was zorostans insulting sanji and downplaying his strength or trying to claim that zoroo is way over sanji when the truth is they have always been close in strength zoro is a bit stronger but
Zoro vs sanji is extreme diff always

I even saw zorotards claiming he was ever above luffy when he was never (zoro not getting a tough fight till wano is irrelevant and it doesn't mean he or sanji didn't get stronger and it doesn't change the fact they were close in strength going sanji got used as a hype tool against doffy doesn't suddenly make him weaker then zoro that's not how it works.

Not to mention acting like sanji being a cook somehow means he can't be close in strength to zoro.
Zorostans have also had a tendency to insult sanjis character and act like he isn't loyal because he has a code etc


This led sanji fans to insulting zoros character and claiming sanji > zoro




Basicallyzorostans threew the first stone and then sanji fans retaliated in kind
Not to mention they take stuff of sanji out of context or being disingenuous to try and downplay sanji like acting like saturns eye beam one shot him when it just hurt him and then he got hit by a paralysis technique

Post-ts only made it worse with oda clowning sanji yet giving him more char development, zoro remaining more or less static with more significant power-ups, wings of pirate king grouping them again, etc

Oda never clowned on sanji everything we get in the story shows that sanji and zoro remained close in strength zoro and sanji both got powerups on onigashima one via awakening one being adv coc they are equal powerups
One aspect of the power ups that led to luffy beating kaido
Oda being willing to allow sanji to lose or look bad I wouldn't call it clowning but it is silly when zorostans try to claim this as evidence that zoro is way above sanji when they didn't provide anything that says zoro would do better against doffy
(both zoro and sanji got stronger after dressrosa so you can't use wano feats for zoro look at crocodile)
And sanji dominated vergo his leg cracking (his body was already weakened due to. Damage nerfing durability)(damage nerfed durability it doesn't nerf Ap

Sanji does train he fights luffy all the time

Sanji and zoro have always been close in strength where any fight is extreme diff and any reasonable person would say to that Eos sanji is stronger then mihawk
Its annoying when zorostans can't accept that zoro has to be way above sanji in their heads not to mention acting like adv coc automatically makes you way above anyone who doesn't have it yet
Or try to claim sanji doesn't have the conquerors characteristics by taking panels out of context

Don't know about war but their rivalry has always been a thing since pre-ts like Yasheen already stated.
They are in constant competition with each other over the most petty tings which is pretty ironic coz the dynamic has literally transferred over to the fanbases only difference is that these two actually respect each other and acknowledge their strengths which can't be said about some parts of the fanbase particularly the Zoro side imo. To give an example, we had Sanji telling Zoro to stop wasting time even though his opponent was Lucci last arc and I'm pretty sure the opposite has happened with Zoro as well. Oda also having both their opponents have a negligible doriki difference in comparison to each other or also be in competition with each other (i.e. Mr1/Mr2, Kaku/Jyabura, King/Queen) and the fact that Luffy's opponent are usually much stronger also fosters the rivalry. Then there's this wings dynamic Oda's introduced into the plot.

One event that I think makes this a sticking point for many Zoro fans is Luffy v Zoro on Whiskey Peak and some don't believe the dynamic has changed since then so if Luffy = Zoro or Zoro > Luffy like some say lol then Zoro cannot be close to Sanji (in their minds) but reality imo is that if Sanji also fought Luffy at that point in the story I don't think the outcome would've been that much different.
