General & Others What was left for Garp to do as a marine? Should he have just left with Dragon? Am I the only one not satisfied with his interaction with Dragon?

It's because we don't know why Garp joined the Marines in the first place nor what his sense of justice is. Most we got was "those at the bottom needs protection from those at the top."

If Oda explained Garp's sense of justice as something along the lines of "the corruption from those at the top will trinkle down and infect those at the bottom unless someone shields them from it", and that believing the WG is a necessary evil for the time being, it would be better.

Basically Garp believes the Marines should be forces for good, and does his own thing to keep the influence of the WG away from them. Rank chasers tend to suck up to the WG to push their corruption.

@Uncle Van @Sir Yasheen I think you’re both right. We need to know his reason for joining. Also protecting the marines is a trash reason, the only thing I can think of is Sword.

Also it just seems like he does whatever he wants internally that’s so maybe he just doesn’t want to have to restrict his movements like he’d have to as a Rev or Pirate. The odd part about that though is he’s not doing much with his freedom.

SWORD couldn’t be started by him. That would have had to be Sengoku since the point of Sengokus statement to Garp this chapter was there’s no change Garp can do with his post.

Sword could have already been around. But your point makes sense. We will likely find out more about him soon. It seems like he’s about to die soon unfortunately.

Pretty much.

Leaving the marines what can Garp do to serve justice? They’re the only law enforcement faction that exists and so Garp’s role is to set a good example and cultivate new heroes for the future. Dragon can leave and start forming a revolutionary group because he’s only 17 and dedicated his life to building this force which still isn’t strong enough on its own to bring down the celestials. Garp and Sengoku acknowledge that there’s nothing they can do to change the whole govt on their own so they do what they can to try and enact justice but still have to deal with the fact that their faction has corruption in it, a corruption they don’t have the power to stop. They’re two sides of the same coin one tries to use his status to make a difference, the other tries to lead by example, at the end of the day they can only do so much. Say Garp leaves the marines, you either retire and do nothing or you become some kind of vigilante, not many options if you’re passionate about justice and want to make a difference.

Oda should have done better job on writing garp's motivation. Garp seem like a failure compare to goat fujitora in characterization aspect @Zoinks52 @Fujishiro
Be patient powerscale bro, this is Oda we're talking about.

How many people wanted a God Valley movie in place of film red, not expecting a gv flashback in the canon manga?

And they are right, it's too early for the WG to fall, they can change the WG as much as xebec could: indirectly, through building up / influencing the new generations.

Garp is between a rock and a hard place. He does whatever he can to ensure the navy's future has more good than bad Marines

I’d imagine that it would have been easier for Garp to build the RA than Dragon. Especially considering he put down Xebec and knew the truth of the celestial even more so than Dragon. He could have done a ton. Just by spreading what really happened in God Valley and breaking people’s trust in the WG.

I suppose it could be compared to a school.

Garp is the teacher who knows that the school board (Gorosei) and the Minister of education (Imu) are utter lunatics that only care about cutting funds, indoctrination and getting more kids to enrole for the cheapest amount possible. The kids are only meant to become workforce. By staying as a teacher Garp can try to save some youngsters like Kuzan or Koby.

Sengoku recognizes that the best he could ever do is to become the principal of the school because that way he can at least try to divert the worst initiatives from above and make sure the principal isn't an asshole who just sucks up to the school board and fires teachers like Garp.

Dragon is trying to build a school of his own free of corruption. But not only is he trying to build a new school, he is actively doing so while building a parallell school system going directly against the Minister of Education. That in itself is unheard of as all the current schools have to abide by the school regulations whereas Dragons version doesn't adhear to those rules.

That’s a good way to put it. Do you think Garp could be more effective elsewhere.
