Questions & Mysteries What was the point of Lucci in this arc?

#1
He came to Egghead for the purpose of assassinating Vegapunk, yet failed at every opportunity for it

his resume so far:

-fails to kill Atlas and Stella
-gets low diffed by Goofy
-gets betrayed and negged by Stussy
-goes high diff vs Seraphims with Goofy’s help
-stalls Zoro for 16 chapters then gets one shot

Literally what was the point of even bringing him in this arc at all? Just another hypetool?

I think really do think he was brought back just for the Enies Lobby call back vs Luffy.

Then Oda didn't really know what to do with him (and Kaku) so he got used as an excuse to keep Zoro away from the main plot so that Kuma could have his moment, and Luffy can reignite Bonney's belief in the sun god without having Zoro interrupt any of that.

so that Kuma could have his moment.
Which was just 1 mere punch that Saturn immediately healed/regenerated from? Kuma hasn’t done anything else this entire arc besides being a dead heavyweight log they gotta carry around. Was it really worth it then?

How would Zoro interrupt any of that though? His plot significance in this arc is no less than Sanji or Jinbei: just another combat-oriented SH

If anything, having Zoro around would have helped in stalling Kizaru and letting Luffy focus on Saturn from the very beginning

Zoro isn’t this magical hero who can solve all plot problems by cutting stuff. I’m sure even he would have been affected by Saturn’s hax as well like everyone else was.

Purely from a strength standpoint. Although fair the Bonney Nika argument was a tad shite.

He's a CP0 filler character, I guess.

Maybe Cp0 still has some roles to play in other arcs or in final war and Oda is reserving the strongest CP0s so he used Lucci and Kakku as fillers.

If I were to write a detailled answer here, I would need to confront you with a wall of text, because there is so much to write with all those hints and little things Oda dropped along the way. But if I were to just write the short answer here, without any explanation, people would definitely call me a troll without me intending to be one. I think, I will try it none the less with the short answer. So, I really mean it, when I say:

Lucci is not done. He was on the SHP's side even as he attacked Vegapunk (He wanted to eliminate Stussy, who was still working for the WG and banked on her interfereing with him attacking the Stellar, because if the Stellar dies, Punk Record dies with him - although I do not think, that everyone of the WG knows this). With her out of the way, the SHPs and Vegapunk are able to flee the island, if Kizaru can be stalled that is. And this is, why Lucci wants to be seen as an enemy again - to stay behind on the island and stall Kizaru. Because Kizaru is able to bridge the distance between himself and the Sunny in mere moments even if the SHPs are able to flee. You can see that in chapter 1093 and 1094 quite good. So, someone needs to stay behind to keep him occupied, if he tries to go after everyone. The problem is, the SHP are unable to "cut of a limb to safe the body" as Lucci put it mere chapters back - they are unable to sacrafice even one of them. So, he made himself seem like an enemy to be able to stay back. This is also why the match between Zoro and Lucci seems like a stalling match without any embellishing techniques. But it is a stalling match for Lucci and not for Zoro. Because Zoro is the only character that is able to stall Lucci, not because he is strong, but because Zoro would get lost, if Lucci was to somehow break free from the fight beforehand or flee. This would mean that the SHPs would need to search for Zoro, which would result in them loosing even much more time, they don't have. Lucci needs to occupy Zoro on the same spot for someone to come and get Zoro. And you can plainly see this as Jinbe arrives there and the fight ends. Zoro was right, when he commented that Lucci thinks that the agent decides how long their fight gets - Lucci decided when the fight ended, because he could very well decide when he wanted to lose.

Now Zoro gets safely back to the Sunny and Lucci is able to stall Kizaru, who will get up eventually and interfere with their escape.

By the way: Lucci has been bitten by Stussy and look what exactly she is - this is no DF-power, but she is indeed a vampire.

Also good to know is the fact that Lucci fits the Gorowase of the DF-names Oda play with the SHP, who have eaten one. Lucci fits the remaining 2 and 9 perfectly. 😉
