My tinfoil is that he will attempt to return it to Shanks, but fail for whatever reason (Shanks' death or just refusal).

Then he will change the world with the inherited will, which the straw hat is a symbol of. And so it will remain in his possession OR he gives it to someone from a younger generation one day.

Yeah but if the SH is a weapon against Imu or a symbol of the lost kingdom the D and freedom, if Luffy took down Imu I don’t see the point for the SH to be given again

As a symbol of freedom, it will make sense for Luffy to give it to someone else when he’s older.

But this also depends if Oda will show us older SHs. If not, I think he’s just keeping it.

Yes but the SH is clearly tied with Imu and Joy boy (the giant ice straw hat in Imu Chamber). It is also tied with the prophecy and the chosen one who will free everyone in 20 years.

Luffy will be the one. There won’t be anyone to wait after Luffy. Except if Oda creates an other shadow menace the world will be in Dragon hand and the D and lost Kingdom will live again.

Maybe Oda will say that the SH is like a crown form the kings of D so even after Imu defeat people will still wear one generation after generation.

I can see Luffy giving it to the new gen but I am not convinced it really makes sense.

I can't speculate on what Oda will do with it, but right now it just seems like a symbol of freedom. As such he can easily pass it on, even after he fulfills the prophesy.

I don't believe it is a "weapon" or anything like that. It would make the whole modesty of Luffy caring about a "worthless" straw hat redundant. When it's an important part of the story because he cares for it over Shanks and people get surprised over it.

Hope Luffy keeps it as the main man who’s changed the world, that all the other Strawhat users have been waiting for. It wouldn’t feel right having Luffy without a Strawhat.

The Straw Hat is a metaphor for inherited will, so Luffy must have some will he wishes to pass on. I think the best bet is Makino's son.
