Jack was introduced as a massive threat that took over a island and challenged a admiral. He even had to get ganged up on to take him down before inu got his sulong boost.

- Queen is 1 of the best scientists in the series and he was even allowed to use really any of his poisons only the ice oni virus. He is way more dangerous than he was shown and if he was allowed prep for a war like the alliance got he'd probably have the highest kill count. This isn't even counting his actual physical abilities just the threat he can be from using poisons. Any war or just island that doesn't have a chopper on it would get hundreds if not thousands turned into ice oni which is only 1 of his viruses.

- king is a near indestructible flying monster. Just this alone is vastly more intimidating than vergo. Then you add that he loves torture while having high level flame powers and nobody would pick meeting him over vergo.

Vergo had more aura mainly from his personality and Mingo hyping him but any of the calamities are way more dangerous. The weakest of them is a threat to a entire island as the baseline for the calamities.

Not sure why Doffy hyping him matters since he's supposed to hype his underling anyway, not to mention said hype was immediately debunked when Law neg diffed him

For reminder: all four of Vergo's victims: Tashigi, Sanji, Smoker and Law. All of them are central characters supposed to grow massively during the timeskip. Punk Hazard is second arc after timeskip and debut for post TS Tashigi, Smoker and Law.
So we are supposed to see the growth of those 4, only to find out those 4 got destroyed by Vergo.

TLDR:
Vergo felt like REAL THREAT, DANGEROUS enemy during Punk Hazard arc. A BIG OBSTACLE.
Calamities are clowns that never felt like serious threats.

Not every captain hypes thier subordinates and Mingo was wanking the hell out of vergo. It set him up as a even bigger threat because someone like Mingo was glazing him. Imagine in wci if bm was hyping kata as 1 of the strongest fighters she's ever seen and Imagine how you'd view him before he ever threw 1 punch just off the weight of bm hype of him.

Its bad when people are arguing the opponent you beat on panel in a head on clash might still be above you because said opponent was actively sandbagging and not fighting like he usually does just for a debt

What's crazier is that same Dragon attacked someone as strong as Zoro and Kinemon immediately after that. He wanted NOTHING to do with Vergo, based off presence alone. Vergo just appeared and left that dragon in a cold sweat.
