Mostly due to Oda making Ace's DF having a big disadvantage vs Red Dog's DF, similar to Enel vs. Pre-TS Luffy, which no one see that was coming. Nothing to do with Oda's character writing.

Aokiji is hierarchically superior of Monet's DF, and Monet got hurt by Nami's fodder heat attack. Heat also counters Aokiji, while Aokiji counters heat as well. No advantage or disadvantage between Aokiji and Red Dog.
