Zoro is older than Luffy
Rayleigh is older than Roger
Beckman is older than Shanks
Killer can be considered a first mate too and guess what ? He's older than Kid.

Every regular 1st mate has no Goal, Smart
But Zoro has his own Goal to become WSS unlike reylegh

1st mates & captain seems like equal but my point Zoro > Luffy

i would say the older age trope is related to the role of older sibling, where the older sibling is dependable.
Vice captain is the position second only to captain, so the captain has to make sure the vice captain is someone you can depend on, someone you can trust your life to.

It's a very accurate pattern and maybe Oda preferred the mainest crew members to resemble the young prodigies. That could be one explanation. Nevertheless Zoro might be younger than Luffy but I see him more likely stronger haha.

Imo it's to show they are reliable to their respective captains. Kinda like a big brother to me they represent to other half of their respective captains. Captain's here are fun loving, wild, and reckless while VC are calculated, calm, and smart (less so for zoro). The VC is to balance the captain by what oda's pattern is showing.
