Character Discussion Why Coby is a bum

#61
When was he humiliated off Boa?

Read the chapter again. Captain Smoker was clashing evenly with Boa Hancock who has CoC, CoA and CoO.

Koby has never shown to be competent in 1 v 1 fighting. It's like the King's Punch great AP but trash at CQC. Smoker negs Cryby 1 v 1 in CQC
Rewatch the scenes without the blinders and you'll see. Everyone knows that Smoker is a featless joke. We don't even know if he could beat Nami. Cry yourself to sleep.

Smoker beat Luffy twice.
Pre-skip
Battled Law
And lost and we know for a fact Law didn't do everything he was capable of at the time
Battled Doflamingo
Off-panelled - we don't know what happened other than he was powerless against Doffy
Clashed evenly with Boa
Genuine feat, well done, but more of a powerscaling inconsistency if you ask me. Oda's not great at this.
Battled haki specialist Vergo
People really overhype Vergo. Dude was basically about as weak as Pica.

Coby still hasn't won a single 1 v 1 don't get cocky.
I'm possibly the biggest Smoker fan out there, but please stop the wank.

Coby's hardly ever had a chance. He's had way less screen time than Smoker. Smoker vowed to get much more powerful during Fujitora's flashback in Dressrosa, so obviously he's going to be far more capable when we next see him (hopefully he arrived on the ships in 1088).

It's pretty clear that by the end of the story both Coby and Smoker will be top tier fighters. I really don't understand the squabble.

Edit: The whole point of Coby's character arc is to show a pathetic weak civilian reach the top of the armed forces through determination. He showcased said determination with his crazy growth in pre-skip. He showcased his strength in this chapter. He's still young and inexperienced (hence he's still not a rear admiral or above) and still lacks the confidence to take charge or dish out orders. There will be a watershed moment in future when he shows us leadership, at which point having acquired all three he will be the finished article.

The whole point of Coby is we see his progress over time as outsiders, the same way the world sees Luffys progress as outsiders. Coby's a scary motherfucker. He went from the weakest kid on the planet to someone who could compete with Cipher Pol (not 9 or 0) members in a matter of months and now he's just shown us he can probably defeat every arc Villain Luffy faced pre-Doffy, and that's at minimum. Wouldn't be surprised if Doffy can't tank an Honesty Impact at this point.

Why do you think he's a one trick pony?

He's plenty fast. He learned Soru after 2 months of training pre-time skip.

He's got a few speed feats with the little screen time he gets.

You're acting like he would never be able to hit anyone.

Just gonna move the goal post to 1 vs 1's none of which smoker looks impressive in ever.

Forcing Law to retreat in a 1 v 1 isn't impressive?

Going blow to blow with a haki master like Vergo isn't impressive?

I'm not moving the goal posts I'm stating facts. 1 v 1 fights are different to being able to destroy a lot of shit. The same way Kings Punch and Dragons drill have a lot of AP we know we know someone like Jimbei would wreck them.

The moment you used the excuse power scaling consistency was when I could tell you're dishonest with your debates.

Either it is or isn't.
