Chapter Discussion Why do people keep saying Pirates acting like Pirates is bad writing

Literally in the first Chapter its established Pirates do whatever they want

Even when Luffy is getting jumped he doesn't think Katakuri is doing anything wrong

Shanks jumping Kidd and taking advantage of them having the poneglyphs and BB waiting for the best opportunity to take poneglyphs when Kaido is gone is them being Pirate like

1. Shanks literally told us he bet whatever he learned from Roger on Luffy and new generation.
He obviously was waiting for Luffy and competing with him like he promise now since he a great Pirate
2. A pirate means they can do has they please. For example Luffy wants to be a hypocrite and and selfish mostly to people that is his friends

It just shows that kid is a greater man then shanks. Shanks never fights if he doesn't have numerical superiority. Against kaido and king he came up with his entire crew. Against Laramaki also he pulled up with his crew. Against kid he uses his entire fleet to put himself in a winnable position. And he is allowed to do that. As you said he is a pirate.

But he lacks the balls which Eustass Kid doesn't.

It's mainly a macho mindset overfocused on power scaling.

Certain people only want the kind of fight that Oda satirized with Franky versus Señor Pink: whoever comes victorious wins because of a display of superior ability and there's no factor polluting this perfect archetype of sportsmanship and mutual respect between "brothers"; such factors add complexity to the situations and make it harder to read them from the simplistic approach such people commonly have.

What has been happening these days with Shanks versus Kid is the perfect example of this because these people simply can't fathom how a character may want to reduce the potential casualties to the minimum. They assume that Shanks is afraid of Kid or that he needs help because, from their simplistic mindset, a person MUST confront another with full sportsmanship (therefore in one on one in a macho fight) and if this isn't the case then that's because they either are too afraid, too weak to do so or Oda just is bad at writing.

Katakuri stabbing himself? Bad writing. Kaidou flirting in the middle of the fight? Horrible. Sanji awakening his dormant genes? Pathetic, daddy Vinsmoke saving the day. Zoro needing Enma to grow stronger? Pathetic, it's all Oden's merit. Sengoku fighting alongside Garp to take Shiki down? What two weaklings. Such people, again, don't want diverse fights, don't want characters to approach fighting in different ways, and more importantly: don't want battles as a tool to tell a story (which they must be first and foremost).

The only, only thing they want are ten versions of Franky versus Señor Pink, but without Oda mocking them for it.
