Character Discussion Why does Oda make Nami so irrelevant?

#21
Because OP as a manga has drastically changed since Enies Lobby. Initially, yes Nami was a clearly very important character, but Enies Libby is when OP turned into a battle centric manga and Nami as a character didn’t fit the new manga styling.

Her role as a navigator gets touched on some, but it’s no longer important. I still stand by the biggest insult Oda did to her was having the Barto club be new world pirates without a navigator showing her role was barely needed.

She will hopefully get some shine, in the future, but she’s not the tritagonist of the straw hats anymore, that’s Sanji. Nami and Usopp are each the human character the readers are supposed to connect to. (Like leorio in HxH/Zenitsu in KNY/Magna in BC)

Wtf are you guys arguing about? Nami eats up majority of the screen time in the straw hat crew, you don't choose who's relevant or irrelevant based on what they bring to the crew, that's for the author to decide. She can be the most useless member of the crew and still be one of the most relevant, the two things aren't mutually exclusive.

If Oda really intends to make Nami the third most important character, he simply doesn't execute it well. Both Law and Sanji have become much more prominent characters than her in the post ts and the situation tends to get worse because the closer the ending, the more important characters will have to be ingress in the main plot.

it has nothing to do with powerlevels. Weak characters more relevant than nami in wano:
  • tama
  • momo(even before he became an adult)
  • Toko
  • Yasu
  • Chopper
Bullshit. Only Tama of these characters has ever done anything, and that's thanks to the fact that Nami and Usopp constantly protected her. Even wounded, Ulti would have killed Tama if Nami and Zeus hadn't finished her off.
It was also Nami who found out about the supply of weapons, she saved robin and Toko from Orochi.

a character doesn't have to be relevant in term of fights if is not for nami and her navigate skills crew would be already dead also wait she is going to play a big role at BB's arc
Most crews do just fine navigating the seas. Nami is supposed to be important but it's not highlighted to the point that it feels important or special.

Nobody in the canon is constantly stating how hard it is to navigate this area or that.

Also even her dream of drawing the map of the places she visits, we don't even see that. Oda said she does it off screen, that's how she's going to reach her dream when she set out to sea? Offscreen her actually making the map and just show up one chapter with it done?

Yeah I get this feeling that One Piece has started to suffer from the same issues that a lot of other Shonen suffer as they enter their endgame - the focus of the story inevitably starts shifting towards the more powerful characters, and the "weaker" ones are left behind to become essentially just cheerleaders to the top tiers. I still have some faith in Oda that the weaker Strawhats will have actually important things to do in the future, even if it's not combat related (combat is just a small part of the overall narrative after all), but I can't deny that a lot of them have been getting the short end of the stick since entering the New World

It has nothing to do with power-levels
Proceeds to name powerlvl stuff from the other two characters who he is comparing with:
Luffy is the next joyboy. He has ACoC, VOAT, will of D, son of dragon and grandson of garp, and probably a legendary DF.
Zoro is the next Ryuma. He has ACoC and ties to the shimotsuki clan, with it being hinted that he's related to Ryuma.
xd

P.S: Nami is not the 3 main character anymore since many years ago.
