Pretty sure Zoro was born in a Dojo and train his swordsmanship there. So it's natural to have an ambition of becoming the World's Strongest Swordsman.
Because swordmanship skill is what he relates to be the ultimate achievement since he was raised in a Dojo!
Zoro is a conqueror and was raised around swordsmen to it is only natural that he would want to be best of them all,so Zoro's dream to be WSS was born!

Well his master is from Wano and a former Samurai and IIRC Zoro started training himself since he was extremely young. The way of the sword is something he came across since that much of a young age. And he got CoC in his DNA on top of that. Assuming that's how it works for Oda.
